The Velox cloth ones are cut to fit. The hard plastic ones -
which can crack with high tyre pressures - come in a
continuous loop and have to be the right size.

A Velox tape should fit a 27" wheel judging from the amount
I cut off last time I used one on a 700c rim - there's only
an inch difference.

Just to agree with Guy. Velox is the stuff, far superior to
anything else. Only downside is if you break a spoke you
need to replace it. Its not expensive though.

I keep a couple of rolls for justin. Not that I've ever

OK, stupid question time: how do I know which is the correct width? Does the tape need to fill the complete width of the rim, or just the 'gutter' in the middle where the spoke heads are?

Reminds me of an experience in SJSC. Went in, getting a new
wheel. 'Rim tape - can I have some velox please'. 'You
don't want that, you want one of these plastic ones'. 'Err,
no, I do want it' for a couple of iterations - he gave up
in the end. I went in a month later and what did I see but
one of their mechanics wandering around with a massive roll
of the stuff...

The gutter would do as far as protecting the tube, if it
stayed put. Some tapes will; Velox doesn't always. So get
the widest that will fit (without going up the sidewalls).
Not all dealers stock all widths but /usually/ one of the
main ones they have will do.

Velox tape can be reused in an emergency (or even a non-
emergency if you really want). Just roll it up, attend to
spoke, wind it back on. It is sticky enough.

But it is wise to carry an extra short length of tape (or a
whole spare roll) to cover any hole caused by a spoke.

You just leave the nipple under the tape and replace
the spoke.

Unfortunately I have had a run of spokes breaking at the
nipple. Come to think of it havent had a spoke break for a
year yippee 🙂
