  1. so i recently replaced some 15yr-vintage minoura magrollers with some fairly
new poly-lytes, and i have a couple things to say...

i miss the width of the minouras...maybe 4" wider?

the 'native' resistance of the kreitlers is actually quite nice, but i
wonder if i'll miss the adjustability of the mags?

the minouras were treated well...a couple new belts and bearings once. i
have to say, the kreitlers don't feel all that much different.

the kreitlers discolor my tires badly, while the mags did not. clearcoated
    drums?

    the minouras are noisier.

If you're wandering side to side so much that you cannot stay on
regular width Kreitlers, (not the narrow hot dog version) then you have
    other problems to deal with.

Shift gears to vary the resistance on the Poly-Lyte rollers. If I were
buying new rollers today, instead of using my old purchased used
Alloys, I might look at the Lytes or Mytes. Some resistance without
the cumbersome Head Wind fan. Fan has variable resistance, but when I
ride rollers I vary the resistance by spinning more or less and
shifting gears. Its enough resistance variation since my goal of
roller riding is aerobic exercise, not bicycle training. So the Lytes
and Mytes would by easier to move around and put in the car when going
to the weekly roller rides. Fan on the front of Alloys takes up more
room and is more awkward to carry up and down stairs. And much, much
    heavier.

How much different would they feel. They roll around and around.
    Smoothly and quietly.

Discolor tires? How do black tires get discolored? And does it matter
since the discolored tread on your tires will be on the dirty roads
    outside.

Yes. I borrowed some Minouras with the mag adjustment thing before
getting my used Alloys. The Minouras worked fine. But they were
noisier. I think of the noise as a sign of quality. Less noise is
higher quality. Or maybe not. Minouras are much lighter weight than
the Alloys. Solid and heavy being a sign of higher quality. Or not.

In any case, ride outside for more enjoyment than rollers. When the
weather is really bad, attend roller rides in town with other people.
    Social event.

I have a friend who raced bikes at a moderate level -- he was state
champion and a category 2. He was dating a woman who previously had
succeeded at nearly the highest levels of the sport -- winning a world
pro championship and possibly an Olympic medal.

Unfortunately for my friend, the girlfriend would often compare him to
her earlier boyfriend. So one day my friend is riding his normal,
consumer-width rollers and she say about her ex- "He used to ride
these narrow rollers that were only about a foot across no problem --
    could you handle those?"

i'm already put off by your tone. i can ride no-handed, but after a set of
intervals i'd hope you would wander too. it's not a chronic problem (in my
case), but the loss of width is something i noticed immediately.

exactly. so why does everyone say that kreitlers are the proverbial 'bomb'?

jesus christ dude...go get yourself laid. my tires are blue, for what it's
worth. until i ride the kreitlers, after which they are charcoal grey. no
it doesn't matter, just call me curious, ok?

Cuz they are something you will give to your kids, last forever.

  6. As I said dookie, you have other problems to deal with. And get
yourself a keyboard with a Shift key to create capital letters. Or did
your intervals make you so tired your fingers could not find the Shift
key. How is it a person who cannot use a Shift key can hold down a job
that pays well enough to afford Kreilter rollers?

are you kidding? no one's bitten on the lower case resume yet, so i had to
    buy 'em used of course.

i feel that i asked some reasonable questions, made some observations, and
got some wise-ass remarks in response. perhaps that is not what was
intended. in any case, i'm sorry my typing upsets you so very much.

i'd still like to know why they make my tires black...much more so than
    several thousand outdoor miles have.

  8. yo dookie,
yer gonna get what you pay for on this forum. anytime anyone asks a
question here, the people with no other lives and too much time on
their hands immedialty assume that you just bought a $5000 bike and a
cat 5 license, or you'd be responding to the insipid 'is it illegal to
remove my kickstand' questions. note that i'm puposely _not_ using
upper case letters in solidarity. also note the last time i posted was
a few months ago, because I have a life and i only poke in here when
    i'm bored.

i suspect the reason for the tire discoloration is that the plastic is
softer and more susceptible to static charge, so it attracts dirt and
holds onto it, but that's just my opinion and i could be completely
    wrong.

    fwiw - i have a set a minouras with the mag loader and i can't say i
have found any reason to trade them in, other than bragging rights to
the posers in this forum. my rollers are over 20 years old, have moved
with me 6 times, traveled extensively to races, been used as warm-up
and training for roller races, and could certainly be handed down for
another generation. i personally would miss the mag feature as i use it
often (as often as i use the rollers)
