Roof Rack or Trunk Rack

We don't have one yet, but want to get a roof rack since you can lock up the bikes. We are afraid it is too easy to steal bikes from a trunk rack (car style trunk rack that is) since all you have to do with most models is cut the straps that hold it onto the trunk?
any thoughts about the security of trunk racks?

I have seen numerous people go to put their bike up on the roof and slip dropping the forks onto the roof leaving a nice little dent or scratch.

Obviously with these kind of things the more you pay generally the better they are. We have a rack that inserts directly into the towbar. The rack has several points at which the bikes can be chained to, but hey like anything, a burgular with the right equipment will still be able to steal them.

I've got a Yakima KingPin4 hitch mount rack, works so very nicely, completely folds flat when not in use, pivots down to let me into my jeep, perfert! for security I drilled a hole in the top plastic peice, sliced access to the side of the hole (in the top cap) and ran a 17' long 3/8" bike lock cable through the rack tube itself, the ends of this secure through the frame of the jeep, and its long enough to compley secure two bikes, frames, wheels, everything, and its pretty secure, itd be easier to steal the truck than the bikes, not that they cant be stolen, but itd require some serious tools. when not in use the cable wraps around the rack post about 20 times and I still lock the rack on as well.
2 bikes on top of a car=$300+ 4 bikes on the hitch=$160, plus anyone less than 6' tall would have issues loading bikes ontop of an SUV.....

I like it because it keeps the bike off of my car and I don't have to worry about parking garages!

i have a pt cruiser, so i took some bike mounts and put them on a board, and when i go places i just take my back seats out and my bike fits in there perfectly, and i don't have to worry about sitting it on its side. this way i can lock my car and bike up without worrying
