  1. I am a 52 year old who has been walking/running (slooow) for the past couple
of years and I am starting to pick up the pace (about 25 miles/week and
planning on more) and am now really paying attention to my shoes. I seem to
be blessed with good feet and have not had any foot/ankle/knee/stride
    problems.

The last pair of shoes I bought were New Balance 536s which seemed ok. I
keep reading that you should get about 500 miles from a pair of shoes while
changing inserts every 250 which I had never done. After about 400 miles, I
bought some sort of flat green gel insert for about $10..... WRONG! Although
they felt ok, after two days, I had all sorts of knee pain.

I threw those inserts and shoes away, got a new pair of the same shoes and
    all is well.

So.... what (if any) type inserts should I use as replacements. No real
running shops around here that I know of.

Also, do you wash your shoes? By hand? Washing machine? I have started
running at the local soccer fields as opposed to the high school track or
street and they get filthy. I haven't been washing them other than wiping
off the surface as I thought that might "warp" them.

    THANKS!

That's 300-500. Depends on the shoe, and the runner. Some might actually get
a little more, I've taken some to about 700.

The 536 is a low-end shoe, so might not hold up as well.

Don't know. Why are you wearing inserts ?

Either. If you machine-wash, take the insoles out, use cold water, and don't
tumble-dry them. You'll probably need a couple of pairs if you do this though:
    they might not dry overnight.

i have a similar question. I do not even own running shoes, as Donovan
pointed out earlier. The shoes in which I ran a half marathon (Nike
Air) turned out to be not designed for runing specifically. That said,
they are very comfortable shoes. Now that I am planning on running a
little more, I want to buy specialized shoes. My plan was to go to a
specialized running shop called "[censored] Pond"(sic). Should I ask for a
particular brand? Which one would be best? I am somewhat flat footed,
so I will probably need to correct for that. While trying on various
shoes, are there particular points of fitting that I should pay
    attention to?

Just pick something that's comfortable. Since you're a little flat footed,
start with a stability shoe. All the good brands make stability shoes. Try on
several brands (the top running shoe brands are Asics, Mizuno, Nike, New
    Balance, Saucony, Brooks, Adidas)

    Cheers,

I guess I meant insoles. What you pull out to wash. Should they be replaced
about halfway through the life of the shoe? I could see they had gotten very
flat on pressure spots such as outside heel and the ball of the foot.

Do shoe companies sell replacement insoles just like the ones that come with
new shoes? The only ones I see in stores are flat Dr. Scholl type or huge
heel cup types or flat gel types.

    Thanks again!

Wad up some newspaper and stick them in the shoes. Take it out after
it gets wet and put some more dry wadded up newspaper in them. The
newspaper will suck the water out much quicker than air drying.

The 500 miles is just an average just like any other.
Depending on the shoe and the runner, it could vary
anywhere from 300 to 600+. I just finished 800 miles
on a pair of Saucony Grid Trigons.

Walking shoes last much much longer. I think I have
1200+ miles on my Asics store brand.

I haven't used these before. I have seen gel inserts in the store.
Don't know how good or bad they are. I think I may have some
lying around somewhere. Might try to dig them up and use them
    and see how they do.

Why do you need to wash your shoe? If they get filthy from the
grass on the soccer field, go home, and just shake them out,
slap them against each other, against the ground, and that
    should take care of it.

    Wiping off is also fine.

Unless you use them for other purposes than running,
you don't really need to care about how clean they look.

  7. The cheapest part of even a good shoe is the insole. I have been running in
the high end New Balance shoes the last few years but I always throw away the
insoles and replace them with SofSoles. Check out Road Runner Sports online if
you can't find them locally. The replacement insoles are much better than the
ones that come with the shoe.

I use the inserts that come with my shoes. In both my Grid Stabils and
my Brooks Trespass, the inserts have patterns that help absorb the
shock. I have tried others, including one suggested by my PT, but they
don't work as well as the originals.

After a muddy run, I may rinse mine under the hose, remove insert, stuff
shoe with newspaper, couple hours later replace newspaper with dry
stuff, repeat as needed, then take out newspaper and allow to air dry.
They're ready to use again within 48 hrs, usually much sooner.

A run in 3 inches of slush (about 4.4 km works for sure) will also work
to thoroughly clean the shoe like new - better than a hose. Apparently
the slush gets in all the crevices of the sole as well as the mesh and
cleans the shoe up quite nicely. (I think I left that out of the race
    report)
