  1. Hi Group,

I'm thinking of paying a visit to this year's rally. The trouble is that I
live in Aberystwyth. So far I'm looking at the following waypoints:

    Aberystwyth
    Machynlleth
    Dolgellau
    Bala
    Corwen
    Chester (I'm OK this far)
    Northwich
    Altrincham
    Manchester
    Oldham
    Huddersfield
    Leeds
    Tadcaster
    York

This clocks in at 189 miles, but I think with an early start is within a
day's range (it is light at 4:30 these days after all). I did look at an
alternative that involved going up to Preston and then due East, but that
added another 25 miles, and I think 190 is enough already!

Do any of you have any tips for crossing the Pennines? Also any advice on
avoiding the busy bits of Manchester would be good.

I've had a look at the CTC routes but these appear to be more for touring an
    area rather than A:B travel.

Any other comments gratefully received! I'm using my trusty old Marin MTB
which I've now fitted with rack, panniers & slick tyres. I gave it a
trial-run yesterday and managed to cover 65 miles in just over 5 hours. I
think I could comfortably shave an hour off of that as my better half came
along and wasn't feeling so good. The only adverse effect of yesterday's
jaunt was a bit of saddle soreness, so I've been to the LBS to order a
Brooks B17 and will shortly be hanging up the Flite Ti!

I'll get my maps out tonight to describe the bit after Oldham to miss
out the towns. Huddersfield is not good for cycling, busy inner ring
road and lots of traffic. i can do you a nice-ish route. You don't need
to ride through Leeds either. I'll be riding from Leeds to York via
Tadcaster after work on the Friday of the rally

  3. I wouldn't recommend using the A64 for the Leeds > Tadcaster > York bit.

After Tad there is a bike track thats fine, I shall be using it. There
are plenty of nice routes from south of leeds (hudders area) to taddy.

    Hi Jane,

Pretty much (the red bit at least), but I would cut through Brithdir just
before Dolgellau and across the valley floor which cuts a slight corner and
avoids a busy (by Welsh standards) stretch of 3 lane highway. This brings
you out on the Bala road.

While that bike track is fine, for getting to the rally it's actually just
as quick to stick to the lanes. I'd go

Tad -> Bolton Percy -> Appleton Roebuck -> Bishopthorpe. The racecourse is then
about a mile past Bish on the left. It's more direct and easy to follow on
the ground that it seems from the map.

There's nothing wrong with going down the bike path on the A64, but the above
is much more pleasant and gives a much quieter route in York itself.

    Cheers,

    Arthur

Leave Oldham to Delph, Denshaw then upthe A640 to J23 of the M62. Cross
to the other side of the motorway to the A road that parallels it to
J24. Go straight on the A643 under the motorway, right at the X roads
back under the motorway. Straight on to the A62 on the NE of Hudders.
We call this Cooper Bridge. Up the A62 ti Birstall then bear right tothe
A643 to Morley, where I live. Right on the A650 and straightto J28 of
the M62. Straight across then left on the A654. Down the hill, up and
round past the houses. Once the road has bent right take the left to
wards Rothwell. Under the M1. straight across to Rothwell, through the
town to the big roundabout, take the A642 to Garforth. across the A63 to
Garforth, through Garforth to J47 of the M1 and leave on the B1277 to
Towton then on the a162 to taddie.
