Avoid Southampton like the plague.
Sticking to mainish roads:
A36 out of Salisbury (There IS a route which you could use, away from the
main road, to get out of Salisbury itself, but it's easy to take a wrong
turn on that, so stick to the A36 for that bit, even though its not very
nice)
A27 branches left at a garage on a trafficlight junction, towards and
through Whiteparish, to Romsey
Left onto A3090 at Romsey (with A27)
Left outside broadlands (Mountbattens place, roundabout in Romsey) then
immediately right on next roundabout (towards Winchester, outside Plaza
cinema)
Right on small minirdbout after FIRST railway bridge (TV shop on corner,
"Botley Road"😉, follow to end
At Luzborough pub at end, left at Rdbout to North Baddesley (use the cycle
track!!!)
LEFT INTO CASTLE LANE IN NORTH BADDESLEY (not too obvious... it's the lights
junction after North Baddesley crossroads, which also has lights)
Follow signs to Eastleigh
... i.e right at end of Castle Lane (traffic lights) (you're in Valley
Park)
... right at School Lane Ind Est rdbout
( there is power lines on masts to right, as a landmark)
... left at ASDA rdbout
.... right at Leigh Rd Bournemouth Rd junction (Vauxhall Garage)
Straight through Eastleigh (under motorway bridge, across Leigh Pub lights,
straight across roundabout at end by church converted into flats), road
swings right and left across railway bridge
Straight on to Fair Oak (past bus garage .... beware SBL drivers!!! :o) )
Left at Fair Oak traffic light at end, and right into Mortimers Lane
(aiming for Bishops Waltham) (or left into Fair Oak itself, and left at Fair
Oak Sq, then right into Mortimers Lane)
At end of Mortimers Lane, right: onto old A333 (now
Bsummatorriblewithfournumbers)
Straight on through Bishops Waltham, through Waltham Chase, to Wickham
LEFT INTO WICKHAM SQUARE (obvious place but not signposted to anywhere)
Through square, follow "main" road round to right, under old rail bridge
(Meon Valley Line) straight across at Wickham Church (take care - nasty
Xroads)
On A333 through North Boarhunt, past Southwick, up Portsdown Hill
On very top of Portsdown Hill, (you'll recognise it!) left onto road that
runs along crest of hill
Follow this down long hill.past A3(M) bridge (aka "Jumpers Bridge !) to the
end, into Havant, minirdbout on way
Bedhampton Rail Sta - right across level crossing, follow road into Havant.
Either right at Havant, then left onto Havant Bypass on roundabout (straight
on would lead to Hayling Island), or left and right through centre of
Havant, then road bend left (on old, original, A27 through Havant) to follow
the old A27 till it meets the new A27 at the eastern end of havant.
That should be a much more pleasant, and certainly safer, probably slightly
shorter (not much in it) route, plenty of refreshment facilities on the
way....
