Routes - North London

The abandoned railway track of the Northern Heights line comes to mind,
as does cycling in the Hamsptead Heath area.

Never heard of the Northern Heights line - any idea where it is?

I do know the area well but did not answer the initial post as it was
too vague.

I'm cantankerous enough not to attempt to answer unanswerable questions.

Hampstead Heath is nice, but cycling is only permitted on two or three
cycleways. The Heath Constabulary can be very strict about enforcing No
Cycling regulations elsewhere.
Improving Heath access for cyclists elsewhere feels like a losing
battle, due to the attitudes of:
The Heath and Hampstead Society
The Corporation of London
The Natives

Cycling in Royal Parks is little better, with the notable exception of
Hyde Park.

My neck of the woods, Edgware. North-west extension of Northern line,
which never materialised. I have not explored by bicycle. AFAIK the
northern end of Edgwarebury lane is a bridleway and can be cycled.

This seems really at odds with the drive to get more people cycling doesn't
it?

on me bike and ride :-) Seriously, I suggest randomly exploring via
whatever roads or paths take your fancy at the time.

Fair point, I do that too. But I have a couple of favourite "routes" where I
am now that I tend to revisit (Richmond Park -> Hampton Court) :-)

Maybe the OP meant to ask where the best cakestops were, so he could
choose the roads accordingly :-)

There are several groups that will go on trips at weekends; Barnet
Cyclists (Barnet Borough group of London Cycling Campaign, usually meet
at North Finchley) Central London CTC (usually meet at a railway
station, take a train to some rural idyll, then cycle & return by train)
There are other LCC groups. Camden LCC currently arranges few rides.

You can get maps of routes recommended for cyclists FREE from TfL
(website www.tfl.gov.uk)
You are also allowed to take your bicycle on non-tunnel sections of the
Underground, so you might consider hopping on the Northern line from
East Finchley to High Barnet to avoid the worst of the sprawl. Likewise
you might take a 'one' train from Alexandra Palace to some place north.

Yup, but there is a fairly deeply entrenched anti-cycling 'culture' in
much of Britain. <rant> Politicians can see cycling's advantages but
don't really want pesky cyclists obstructing Joe Voter's right of
passage. Cycling farcilities are then constructed to please all other
parties.
