  1. riight. At least that was the plan. Tuffgirl and I met at the Boulder
Beach lot at 8:30, in attempt to beat what's predicted to be a 97 degree
day. The original plan was for 8, but you know how things go. We were
thinking two laps on the XC course in prep for BIKE CAMP, but by the time I
got to the top of the ridge, I just knew that two laps weren't going to
happen. I actually felt kind a nauseous form the heat, I'm sure drinking
copious amounts of water didn't help. So we took our time, she really
    struggles with the heat.

I've finally learned that not running my tires at 35 psi really improves the
ride. (d'oh!!) The Svelte Hawaiian is back and fully functional. Go ahead
and smack me, but I sent the fork back for total factory rebuild that is
warranted. I know, I know but a new fork is just not in the budget these
days. Between the tire and pressure and the fork, things are very smooth. I
made the two rocky hair pins, but lost my line just after and dove into the
    dirt and pine duff.

So stoked.. we leave Friday morning for BIKE CAMP!!! We are going to get up
early, drive up and get a fun ride in. We meet up with the rest of the
campers Friday night at Gerricks in trail for schmoozing, appetizers, fit
and mechanical adjustment. Sat, skills and drills in the morning, ride in
the afternoon, same thing on Sunday. Yowza!!

Glad to hear the rebuild worked out for you! That's awesome, and much,
much cheaper than a new one.

Must be one of those threads I missed in my selective lurking. I still
have a 1994 Manitou on my Marin! Hey it works, and its outlasted a lot of
    other bits on that bike.

Free rebuild vs several hundred-dollar fork...no brainer.

Enjoy! Those sound like fun, and it sounds like you've really picked up
some skills. You're gonna make me look bad come August!

well it's not like that but it was a $150 factory rebuild vs a $400 new
    fork.

    squishy Hawaiian. ;-)
I'd only been on that bike for a month last time I went. Now it's an old
    friend.

same skill sets, but I figure I'll learn new things.

Yeah, I scanned this thread hoping to *actually* find a way to beat the
heat. So much for honest Subject lines... =(

Heh heh heh... I can offer a few jewels of wisdom in this regard...

    1) Start slow. You want to build up a sweat before you really start
    hammering.
    2) Save the hilly rides for cooler days. Do the "legs and lungs"
    course when it's really hot.
    3) Plan your ride for early in the day (I know, "duh"😉
    4) Drink lots of water before the ride, take plenty along, and drink
    before you're thirsty.
    5) Personally, I like jerseys with no sleeves when it's really hot -
the riding you do might not be well suited to that though (more skin
    exposed to lose).
    6) The cheaper, lighter plastic SRAM brake levers feel much better to
the fingertips than any aluminum levers when it's really hot (enough
reason for me to use 'em)
    7) Don't hesitate to go slow if you start feeling too hot. You can do
some damage pegging the ol' thermostat if you're not careful.

More sleeve can also be nice if you're worried about burning/skin
    cancer.
