So as long as you personally agree with the off-limits
designations then it's okay? It's obvious you feel you
didn't do anything wrong. That's the root of the problem.

Farmers in tractors who are clear-cutting the forest have
more rights than a mountain biker here.

I poach when I ride my beater-bike to the bakery, so it's
not an issue.

That's a stretch. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that
the moral imperatives involved don't quite equate.

I guess you're right. The freedom to use public lands isn't
important.

Of course it is. Some laws are more "important" to certian
communities and regions. Leash laws are a great example.
Where my folks live there are leash laws but no one pays any
attention to them unless a particular dog causes a problem.
It's ok to let your (friendly) dog run around unsupervised
because the community agrees that it is, it's extremely rare
to get a ticket for it. Conversly in my city everyone is
very very strict about leashes, if you see a dog running
around on it's own it's a big deal and must be dealt with
immedatly. It's just a cultural difference.

Laws are subjective and sometimes laws are just wrong. It's
a good thing to test them from time to time.

The point that she is missing I think is the whole
Californina mentality, at least how I've seen it following
the issues somewhat lightly. Monique, you have to understand
that some Californians are rabidly weird in their politics.
The horse lobby for one thing, has an amazing amount of
clout for getting bikers kicked off trails, even in Marin
County the so-called birthplace of mountain biking. Can't
have those nasty mountain bikers disturbing my $10,000
Arabian. And don't even get me going on the Sierra Club's
antics to create more wilderness, closing down areas that
have been open to bikes for years.

Sure, while the concept of poaching as bad is a good
thing... you have to be careful about applying a broad
brush. Two out of the three areas I ride in are not legal.
One is a city park where they have essentially ignored the
trail building for years, and the trails are now so heavily
used they put "public park" signs up, and wouldn't dare shut
them down. The other area is one of those types of places
that GT refers to, a no-man's land where some utillity or
mystery landowner owns the land, is't a mish mash of public
and private land that's under power lines, that's been used
for biking for years... they even hold races here!!

Can I ask you something, then?

Why did you make a point of saying that you were on an
illegal trail in the very first sentence of your RR? Does
illegal have a completely different meaning in Laguna?

Seriously. I think we're having a language issue here. Do
people in your area use the term "illegal" to mean a set
of trails that are abandoned and unloved? I'm especially
confused because in the above quote, you sound like you're
making a distinction between "illegal trails that are fine
to ride" and "illegal trails that are bad to ride."

I've apparently made a mistake because I don't know the
area, but that being said, your language was really
misleading to anyone not familiar with your area's
terminology.

I mean, I wouldn't make a point of saying I was "illegally
parked" unless I was expressing the fact that I wasn't
supposed to be there and that I was risking a ticket ...
