1. My first race tonight, left work early to make sure I arrived with plenty of time to spare. Did a few easy laps of the course, didn’t really need a warm up as I’d riden in from Gladdy Park.

Handed in my HCC membership form, and handed over $30 bucks ($25 for HCC and $5 for the race entry). Told its 25min + 3 laps (used to be 30min), so happy with that. 🙂 My only plan for this race, was not to get dropped.

Pace starts off nice and easy, I’m content just to sit on the back and basically get a feel for it. Decided to move up a bit just to keep in touch with the leaders. C grade lapped us coming over the line, actually got quite messy as the leading D graders failed to move to the left, much yelling and cursing.

Started to feel the pinch around the 18min mark, but with just 7 mins and 3 laps to go, I was now confident I wouldn’t get dropped.

Heard the 3 laps to go, thought I better start thinking of moving up the field, 2 laps to go people getting a bit twitchy, its now or never.

Heard the bell for the last lap, so I gunned it, turning it into a 1km time trial, an all or nothing move (stupid really!), but I figured I'll try and do a 1 man breakaway, ended up getting a decent jump off the line, and managed to lead until just after the hairpin. No idea what sort of gap I opened up, it was just a case of head down, bum up. Didn’t take the hairpin well, mainly due to fatigue. I could sense them coming just before the turn, searched for that final burst up the hill, but had nothing. Ended up with about 8th place.

Race stats approx 30:25, av speed 34.1 Max 53.8 (last lap)

Lessons

Try to get a wheel, coming around the sweeper, and hold it, spent to much time riding in the wind.

I was actually expecting the pace to kick up on the last lap, and my attempt to get up near the front turned into, bugger it lets go for it, and leave nothing in the tank, but a lesson learnt…maybe 😄

More practice on that corner.

P.S. Thanks for the encouragement BR guys, on the hairpin and finish line

Good racing ess! There were about 7-8 of us BR'ers at the line who saw your
jump then we all waited forever to see you pop around the corner for the
climb to the line.. That last lap downhill and flat section before the
hairpin is the most energy sapping 45 seconds (?) of the entire race if you
are off the front.

cheers,

stuff...

a bystanders' perspective...
ess went round easy the first half and then after 'some encouragement' moved up into the first 5'ish.
We commented on how cruisy the pace seemed to be (Ess's average speed confirmed that) and with one to go the usual hard few at the front werent pushing all that hard!
Except our lad in red 😄
Looking for him coming up the hll we spotted him in (doh!) first!
"Get to that corner first" I yells...
Maybe shoudlnt have said that.
Next thing i know he's not at the front, but a good 30m off th front and still pulling away
Well, we are all standing there trying to picture whether he can hold it for the downhill and the back straight and back up the hill???
Exciting and tense stuff.
"He Could do it. He's pretty strong"...
He would certainly give em curry coming up the hill (curse to all hillclimbers).
See them appear finally and Ess is at the front but the swarm has arrived.
They swallow him up with about 100m to go.
Craigster puts in a good effort for a 4th (followed by Jiordy) and Ess gets 8th.
Great effort. He'll be back...

so if all BR'ers whom have raced entered next week at Kew
(Me, Gags, Ess, Dej and mates Craigster, Jiordy and Phil)
could make it real interesting 😄
just block out everyone else going into last hairpin and share the money 😄 😄 😄

That last lap seemed to go forever while we all waited in anticipation
for a huge Ess win blowing the field apart. I might have to work it out
so I can watch again next week.

Report snipped

Good going for injecting some life into the pack at the end there, Ess. I was leading the bunch on the 'three to go' lap, and had a hell of a job getting someone to take over on the back corner. Eventually slotted into third wheel and waited for the big surge - which never really came. Saw you go and thought you were going to get it for sure - no one was up for chasing and time was running out.

Took the final hairpin harder than I ever have before (one of these days I'm gonna hit a pedal) and passed you on the right. Couple of strongish sprinters claimed the 1-2 and I was edged into 4th by a crit debutant for my first ever white envelope.

Good to see the a.b guys at the line (why weren't you racing, boys?). Only a couple more races left to go before DST ends. Let's keep those K's up over the winter and things should be shaping up for an exciting 05/06 season.

A.B tipping league, anyone?

Cheers,
Craigster.

er, um.. I blame amsterdam 🙄
and doing the race on 'Thunderbird1' woulda bee 'interesting...

and why stop until next summer?
hawthorn hold about 4-5 crits at Kew over the winter
(altho one of the ones i did this winter was sooooo cold i pulled out suffering a huge 'ice-cream' headache!!! )
and there's that roadracing stuff i guess i/we should try so i can have a vague idea what its like to get dropped in that too 😄

Crits are training races, the real racing happens over winter, unless
you're a trackie. Trackie's don't like going outside when it's
raining, or something 🙂

Who needs road racing to see what it's like to be dropped. I get to see
what that's like each Sunday morning. And I get the feeling Mr Belgian
Waffles will be up the front trying very hard to do that this week (or
most likely sitting at second wheel urging Blah or Gags on) 🙂

Yeah nice work craigster!! As you probably noticed I was dying pretty quick going into that corner, but I hope I provided a bit of entertainment to all those watching. At least I didn't go down wondering 😄

Dutch, didn't hear you say get to the corner first! I did that, but those damn legs didn't come to the party..ah well, I'll play it a bit different next time.

Like a crit, but colder.
Like a crit, but wetter.
Like a crit, but there's real hills.
Like a crit, but you might not see anyone else for an hour or more.
Like a crit, but you probably HAVE to ride back to your car.

I'm really only leaving so Carl doesn't get me riding up hills.. 🙂

I am trying to scam onto the ADF cycling championships that are going to be
in Brisbane some time in April. Apparantly there is a 60km road race in the
morning and then a Crit the same evening. Could be good for a laugh and I
think that there are 3 spots for the Arafura Games later in the year in
Darwin. I am pretty sure that I will be way off the pace (I am sure there
are a few A and B grade riders that will be there) but I am pretty keen to
have a crack.

I need my ankle to come good before I can get in any decent training
though.....had it X-Rayed on Tuesday.....nothing broken so it is only a soft
tissue injury. Was able to walk on it yesterday without having to walk on
my toe and look like a gumby.......back on the bike today to and from work
(I loosened off the tension adjustor on the left pedal so that I could clip
in and out without it hurting my foot too much). I started out taking it
easy but then as I took off from traffic lights in Ivanhoe, an older guy on
a Bianchi went past me (he had a run up on the down hill).....so that of
course meant that I had to catch up to him. I tailed him at about 10m
(don't want to be accused of being a wheel sucker) until about 300m before
the paper mill on Heidelberg Road and then I went past him. I was spinning
a bit faster than I normally would so that I didn't put too much pressure on
my sore ankle and it actually felt pretty good. He wheelsucked me up over
the bridge at Hoddle Street and then when I went left at Wellington St, he
went straight on (doing alright for an old fella).

On the trip home I felt really good and got home in close to a record time
for me. I am sure that it has something to do with me riding the
singlespeed all last week including an XC ride with Lindsay out the back of
Greensborough for a couple of hours on the Saturday and half an hour or so
on the Sunday at You Yangs before I came off and hurt my ankle. I am keen
to get my road fixie up and running so that I can push a bigger gear for a
while and see what sort of improvements I get (currently running 38/16 on
the SS mtb).

Okay I just had a look at the crit calendar and the last Kew crit is
March 23rd. How about we aim for that as BR night, I'll even race for
the first time (I wonder how many laps I will last before being dropped)
which means Brett has no excuse to not race as well. Now if we could
only get TimC along, I'd pay to see the reaction to the GVBR bike
surrounded by all those $ bikes.
