  1. male 59 6ft. 225lbs. 35 to 40 lbs. over weight how to i start out? have been able to walk 1 mile at
present stage of excercise plan needs advising, How can i start jogging I'm just to heavy and i'm
unable to jog more than 50 yards short winded but i think the extra weight is the factor I've been
    walking over 8 months

  2. Go over to Amazon or your local bookstore and pick up "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Jogging and
Running". by Bill Rodgers, Scott Douglas.

For you, this is "square one" and I think you'll be able to connect the rest of the dots
    from there...

Jog until you need to walk, walk until you can jog again. Repeat for 10-15 minutes. You'll get
winded and that is ok. As you gain fitness you'll find that 50 yards will become 100 and 100 will
    become 200 and so on.

Keep up the walking whenever you can. Sunday morning walk to get the paper (assuming you aren't way
out in the sticks), park at the far end of the parking lot at work, you get the idea. Every little
    bit helps.

Consult your md to make sure you are in ship shape.

    Keep going you'll get there.

    Andy

    first DON'T WORRY ABOUT SPEED.

Whatever pace you are going now is okay. The way to start is by time. Forget about measuring
    distances at this point.

You need to go at least three times a week. Each "run" can be a mixture of running and walking. The
key is just KEE MOVING the entire time. Start with about ten minutes doing the run/walk mix. over
several sessions (maybe a couple weeks or so) you'll reach the point that you can run the entire 10
minutes. At that point you can begin to expand the time.

Sometime soon you should also consider getting real running shoes. Make sure you get them at a
running shoe store. (they won't be cheap, but they'll be worth it)

You've put down a great foundation, now you can build on it.

    Enjoy the run. Ed

  5. John:

Have you seen a doctor? It's not that you have said anything particularly alarming here, but you
might get a physical, just to make sure. Tell the doc what you have said here.

Beyond that, keep up with the walking. I don't claim any particular expertise, and I know some here
will dispute this, but the walking will allow you to lose weight more easily. Of course, you will
have to eat fewer calories than you burn, but that becomes easier with the walking.

It is no big deal that you are becoming winded at 50 yards. When you need to stop running, just walk
until you feel like running again and then run until you need to walk. That's the way a whole lot of
    people start to run.

How are the knees, ankles, hips? Are they barking? It may be that you need to lose the weight before
you start to run much. I think that if your health permits it, you will want to walk farther. Edge
it up to 2 miles, then 3, if you want to. When you have extended your walking (and dieting), and you
have lost some weight, start intermittent jogging during your walks. Don't push too hard, but be
disciplined. This is a tough set of factors to keep in tension--it comes with time.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

HEY! I resemble that remark. TheBillRodgers

  7. Good start. Walk faster, walk farther. Farther should help your wind because 50 yards isn't going to
    buy you much.

  8. In August I started the same way. Though I was 246lbs but only 35, now I am down to 211. As others
have stated, run when you can, that is what I
did.I would pick a point ahead and run to that point. Just increasing the distance a little each
time. Now I am up to 4 miles on my "long" run and 3 miles (with hills) every other day. I catch
myself running and not being out of breath, kinda weird for me. Again as stated in earlier
posts. Get a good pair of shoes. It makes a difference, especially if you are run/walking on a
hard surface. It has become something I really enjoy. Good Luck. Mark
