  1. I have good OL6 map for the route.
Is it straight forward? any scrambling, scary bits.
Want to do it in Feb so only short days.
Any suggestions for safe interesting alternative route back to NE end of
    Wast water.
    Thanks
    Zinc

    No problems, read this "http://www.fellwalk.co.uk/page26.htm"

You could go up the Corridor and down Brown Tongue,
Up lingmell, steep! down Brown Tounge.
    Bad weather, up/down Brown Tongue
Longer, up to Sty Head and round to Esk Hause and over Great End
to Scafell Pike and down Brown Tongue

Watch you set off in right direction from summit and make the
correct turn at the col between Lingmell ans Scaffell Pike.

Quite safe, no scrambling, but mist on top may challenge your
navigational skills, in which case you could get into scary stuff -
and if you have to scramble you've gone the wrong way!

First ever walk in the Lake District, thought I'd start on Scafell
    Pike!

Instead of bearing to the left I went straight upto Mickeldore...not
the wisest choice for your first adventure!

Straight up to Mickledore is the way I would advise - where did you
    intend to bear left?

Probably for Lingmell Col - that's the easiest way to the summit.

Also, my favourite approach from that side, up by (as in next to, not
in) Piers Gill. There's now a path all the way up. Then join the
corridor route. For descent you could then go towards Great End until
above Piers Gill, then descend to where you joined the corridor route
    and reverse that route.

Alternatively, the corridor route up and down brown tongue would be my
    2nd choice.

Up Brown Tongue would definitely be down the bottom of any list!

I left it out as a bit scrambly (I got the impression an easy
route was required) especially if icy in February.

Yes, both excellent routes with the proviso of sub-scrambling
    involved.

Except in bad weather (sheltered) or if a new walker, which I
    suspect the OP is?

Worth mentioning the route round Great End will be a bit long for
    Feb.

Of course, yes - I was thinking of him standing just below Mickledore
and pondering whether to go straight on or turn left!

Perhaps, but walking up Brown Tongue is the sort of thing to put
    someone off for life!

Depends how fast you go and whether you mind walking in the dark :-)

  10. Exactly.....

I suppose that's one of the issues with a novice who decides (foolishly
in hindsight) that a goal for that year was to walk to the highest
    point in England.

Not having vast walking experience, just consulting the map & seeing a
path(?) route(?) track (?) from Hollow Stones up to Mickeldore seemed
the best (quickest) way. Having to resort to using hands on this route
was slightly more than I'd bargained for at that time. Needless to say
I did descend via Lingmell Col!

Consulting guide books (or in the case of the Lakes - Wainwright) is
    the best prudent approach.

    How about down via Lingmell?

Could you at least preserve the capital letters when discussing this ? All
sorts of distasteful images come to mind otherwise ;-)

I will defer to others on the best ascent route (I've only been up via
Scafell which adds significantly to the distance and effort), but I would
say a detour to Great End is well worth it for the views from this somewhat
unimpressive looking summit. A descent from there to Esk Hause and down
past Sprinkling Tarn is probably the easiest route back but to get to Great
End from Scafell Pike involves a rough walk over a boulder field which may
not be a lot of fun in February. I've done it in a blizzard in May and it
    was no picnic.

Allow a good hour and a half from J36 on the M6 if that's the way you're
    going. Nice drive, though.

I find that too steep for knee comfort in places. If that's not a
problem, it has superior views to Brown Tongue and is shorter to
    the Wasdale Head.

Oh dear, it does rather. Luckily Great Cockup is not in the area.

It *can* be easier under a good layer of snow, but who knows till
the day. BTW nobody pointed out winter equipment might be
    advisable in Feb.

  17. Dont even mention a similarly coloured hill top in Cornwall?
