Being an early adopter of new stuff has its disadvantages. You end up
paying a lot of money only to watch those toys get cheaper later on.

I spent more than $1300 (USD) on my KH muni. Now you can buy a KH muni
for about $500 (USD) that is better. That's the way it goes. The
advantage I got is that I had a bombproof KH muni for several years
before the cheaper version came out.

The cost of the Schlumpf unicycle hub will likely go down after the
initial run. It sounds like this batch may be low volume production
pieces. When production gets going the cost may go down.

Only time will tell, but my prediction is that they will never make more
than the initial run of 100. When it comes to the geared uni, it seems
like people are interested in checking them out, but not forking out the
dough. It seems like nobody on this forums is willing to pay $1300 for
one. I won the auction for the SH/harper for less that that and that was
when only one was available.

Frankly, In it's current configuration I don't ride it much. I can
still go faster on my coker, and the experience is more enjoyable. It
really wants to be a 36/54er. Maybe if I get on Dave Stockton's good
side, we can make that happen :-)

But of course, if there aren't enough early adopters it is entirely
possible that the cheaper version won't come out. If there is no demand
they won't do a big manufacturing run with the associated lower costs.

I would probably be getting one.

I had the opportunity to buy a Harper epicyclic too when I was in
Unicon- in fact I spent a couple of hours riding it trying to decide.
The thing that kept me from buying it over something like a Schlumpf is
that there will be more Schlumpfs around, being an actual mass produced
item- it would be hopefully more straightforward to get spare parts for
it. Also, Gregs Epicyclic at Unicon was mounted on a 24"- I could go
much faster on my Coker.

My reasoning for getting one is either:
-To make you go faster- in which case it needs to be mounted on a 29er
or a Coker
-To travel lightly on a unitour- a Epicyclic 29'er would be great to
cart around airports when travelling overseas

All respect to Jack Halpern, but I'm very glad someone took that
epicyclic Unicycle off his hands (*shudder*). If I was a unicycle
collector I'm betting they might fetch a good price in 50yrs.

The price WILL come down.

If they don't sell the initial run of 100 at $1300 ($130,000!!!),
Schlumpf won't want to have $100,000+ of inventory sitting on a shelf.
After demand slacks off/ends, the price will come down, probably into
the $600-$700 range. At that price, they will about break even.

I think Schlumpf is missing the boat selling the entire unicycle. It
seems that most people just want the hub and are looking at a 29" or 36"
not a 24". I think if he just sold the hub like he does with his
regular bike hubs. I think at price point of $500 to $600 he would sell
a few. That being said his frames look pretty decent and it looks like
the bearing holders are machined. I have already sent Florian an
e-mail about purchasing the hub only and he said not at this time.
Wouldn't hurt for others interested in just the hub to e-mail him. Good
luck.

Would you want to ride it more if it was on a doublewide? I have a sun
26 doublewide I am looking to sell...

Also, if you aren't riding it I'd be happy give those dirt jmps another
try.

Just got word from Mr. Schlumpf that he's not gonna make Seattle...but

The reason he has to sell the frame is because the hub is attached to
the frame with a torque lever. So even if you bought the hub you would
still need to make yourself a custom frame for it. (although just
looking at the photo I would imagine it would be possible to just drill
a hole in an existing frame for the lever to bolt onto.)

What you say is true, oh Great Kiwi. It is also necessary, when drilling
a hole in a frame, to make sure that it is in exactly the right place so
as not to apply any forces to the torque arm. Any misalignment could
bend it so that it is no longer perpindicular to the hub axis. It is
also important to drill a hole of precise diameter and to use a
high-tolerance fitting like a shoulder bolt to make the connection to
minimize any angular displacement of the torque arm should the bolt
loosen somewhat.
