I did my first 50K yesterday since breaking my ankle in May. I didn't
start running again until mid December and in the meantime, couldn't do
anything hard enough to stay in shape because of a heart condition.
Well, I got the heart condition fixed this fall and by the time the
ankle was well enough to start running, I got the OK from the doc that I
could push the heart some. So while my "race" was pitiful by most
standards - Lance would undoubtedly call it jogging - man did it feel
good! Because of the heart condition, it was the first time in 3 years I
could push as hard as I wanted.
The course was almost all singletrack through a redwood forest with
4500+ of climb, a number of waterfalls, a few downed trees to climb
over/under and just enough roots/rocks to make you pay attention. It
rained Friday night but stopped by race time and the skies gradually
cleared as the day wore on. The rain did make parts of the course pretty
muddy and I had to take it real easy on those parts because of my ankle.
There was a cut off at 19K to continue on the next section, and it was
mostly all uphill to there so I was somewhat worried about making it as
I haven't done any climbing. So I pushed that harder than I would have
liked but made the cutoff easily. The next 20K+ I backed off some but
still ran a pretty even pace. Then the last 8K was supposedly all
downhill so I let 'er loose. Unfortunately, 2M from the finish was a
surprise uphill and by then my quads were toast (no uphill training = no
downhill training!) so I went into shuffle mode. Then the last mile
dumped us on a paved, downhill road which my quads REALLY didn't like!
I ended up finishing in a little over 6 hours (your cue Lance!) but
considering the shape I'm in was pleased as punch it wasn't the 7 I
expected. One of my friends I'm coaching (he's aiming for a PR at a 50K
next month), finished a few minutes in front of me to take bragging
rights for our group. But I was second, so the ride home wasn't too bad :-)
