A number of years a go I shared an office with a Scottish
woman at Cornell University. I asked her for a quick
description of Scottish cookery. She thought for a moment
and answered "if you can boil it, you can eat it."

I thought that was "If you can deep fry it . . . "

I believe that a more accurate expression of the Scots
philosophy in regards to food is that if it CAN be boiled it
IS food, and if it is food it MUST be eaten and, as long as
you're eating it, you might as well be listening to a
lecture on how hard things USED to be in the OLD days when
we had naught but moss and a bit of old rust to gnaw on from
    one month to the next.

Funny, that's my experience growing up Irish. Irish
cooking: meals you can drink through a straw, and we don't
    just mean beer.

You can't boil Mars Bars but it's a crucial part of Scottish
crusine - Scots turn them into fritters. I was totally
freaked out when I saw it for the first time a guy chomping
on a chip roll (bread roll stuffed with chips) at the corner
where South Bridge cuts Royal Mile.
