Quoted message said:On September 25, I will be going to my first practice with my local
masters swim team.
I am looking forward to some formal coaching and possibly some racing.
I have a few simple goals.
Be able to do the following: 200IM sc&lc, 1000m free
Be able to do them at a decent time in which i am not the last to
finish. Right now I am not aiming for 1st place, but it would be nice
if i am that good.
I will keep everyone informed.
If you bother to attend practices and competitions, you are ahead of 99%
of the population. In my mind, you quite literally "win" just by doing
the practices and the meets because you beat everyone else who didn't
bother.
Be aware that few swim teams offer "formal coaching" - most learned to
swim elsewhere and just want to get in the training. Lessons are your
best bet for improving your technique; the swim team will help you stay
motivated to train regularly. As with all things, a chain is only as
strong as its weakest link, so lots of practice with a less than ideal
stroke won't find you doing your best any more than the combination of a
beautiful stroke and no conditioning. Truth be told, the latter would
probably work better because swimming is so technique dependent, at
least compared to the other popular aerobic-type activities of running
and bicycling.
Best of luck, Micheal.
