I am a male 23 years old guy, and I swim at the local pool, I like to shave down all my body.
Some guys at the pool shave their legs sometimes. Do you think it is gay like to shave down?
I love the feeling anyway.

poncy/poofy on a man, and doesn't really affect swimming performance in the water anyway. If your'e
worried about looking (being?) gay, then consider why you like the feeling. Does it have anything to
do with swimming?

No it's not Gay! Jeez!
I wish I had a dime for every time I've heard this question.
You do what you feel is right, mate. Don't worry about what other people think.
Your 23 years old and got your whole life to live in front of you. Forget about that whole "is that
gay... is that not gay" thing. You don't have time for that kind of stupid nonsense.

Diablo gave a nice reference to a study done on this just two days ago (the post not the study).
That study does show that there is benefit from shaving - more so than just "mental".
Having said that I'm not sure why some posters here have been so hostile towards it.
Here's my input:
o If you like the feel of it - do it. o If you feel like it makes you faster - do it. o If you like
the looks of it - do it. o If you feel like you bond with the swimming community - do it.
o If you think it makes you look like a "hard core swimmer" - do it.
o If you feel like it's something you "should do" but don't like the idea of it - don't do it. o If
you're afraid someone with control issues will criticize you for it - and you can't handle the
criticism - don't do it. o If you feel it's not necessary - don't do it.
Is it critical? No. Is it harmful? Only if you cut yourself and/or possible razor burn. Will any
else get hurt? No. Is it a waste of your time? Not if you like the results. Is it a waste of anyone
else's time? Only if they have issues.
Shaving hints: Use clippers first. If you're moderately hairy be prepared to spend quite a bit of
time on the first go. Once a week touch ups won't take nearly as long.

And then oil yourself down. You'll be extra slippery and oh so masculine.

Please don't use oil. We don't need an oil slick on the water.
All the elite shave. If you want to try it, go ahead. If you like the feeling, shave regularly. No
one will criticize you, except possibly some non-swimmers who should just shut up anyway.
Don't let the uninformed views of a few non-swimmers decide what you do.

Conventional thinking (which in this instance happens to be in sync with my personal experience)
would say that shaving as often as once a week would negate the effect for purposes of competition,
i.e., targeted time drops. But if that's not the purpose then have at it, I guess.

Not all the elite shave. Perhaps some of the pool swimmers do, but virtually no open water
swimmers do.

Indeed, there are many conflicting opinions on whether you should shave your legs for swimming. A
girlfriend I had a couple of years ago absolutely *loved* my smooth legs, my present girlfriend
thinks they are horrible and unnatural, she thinks I look like I'm 10 years old.
I tend to let the hairs grow anyway now, I don't think it makes that much difference anyway.
