I'm new to cycling and bought my first decent bike in my life (the cannondale CAADX disc 105 in question) a couple months ago. So far I've absolutely fallen in love with the bike and cycling. The only issue I've had recently is with a less than snappy shift while in the big chainring and the 2nd largest cog attempting to up shift. Originally every gear was very snappy and smooth shifting (all other gear combinations still are) but now this combination has become quite irritating. It takes about a 1/4 to 1/2 of a rotation of the crank (this is an estimate and only being noted for comparison purposes) worst case scenario to get any gear combination to shift, except when going from the 2nd largest cog to 3rd largest cog. Much much less when shifting higher gears. This has taken up to 2 full rotations of the crank at times and probably averages a full rotation to 1.5 rotations. Listening to the chain noise while it attempts to shift irritates the life out of me not to mention waiting for the new gear to lock in causing an anxiety/rage attack while starting a sprint out. The problem is only while in the large chain ring and not when I'm in the small. I would have guessed this was a cross chaining problem however I don't have the issue when shifting from my largest cog to 2nd largest. That shift is much quicker than 2nd to 3rd. I had the tech at my LBS look at it and he was unable to duplicate the problem. I am unable to not have the problem. 😡 I have attempted to be as anal about cleaning everything as my limited knowledge at this point allows for. The problem persists when jamming on the pedal and when spinning it with little to no forward resistance. I've tried having the front derailleur in the half down shifted position to try and avoid rubbing from cross chaining, still persists. It may be a slightly quicker shift if I am spinning vs pushing however still not an acceptable level of quickness. I will be taking it in to the LBS hopefully tomorrow or the next day but I would still like some opinions as to what could be causing the problem. Glad I bought from an LBS so I have free services and fittings for the life of the bike! Lol

Maybe cable stretch? -
Would that cause problems shifting in a specific gear? I guess I had assumed that would cause shifting problems through the whole cassette?

Well, I have had it cause problems on one end or the other of the cassette while the opposite end shifted fine but YMMV.
Sometimes it doesn't take much of an adjustment to bring it right back in.

Thank you for the knowledge and advice! I'm assuming derailleur cable adjustment is not something a newbie should be playing with?

You just saved me a trip to the LBS! 😉 thanks a ton!

Pay it forward.

Most definitely will whenever I find the chance. 😉 thanks again!
