Shimano BB clicking

Check the cranks/frames/pedal body for cracks first. then check the
torque on the BB cups they can click like this when slightly loose.

I was experiencing a similar type of noise a week or two ago. I
pulled the bottom bracket, inspected, cleaned, and reinstalled it with
grease and loctite in the appropriate places. The sound went away.
Then last Sunday I broke the right pedal spindle and got dumped in a
busy intersection. I think right around the time I was working on the
BB some grease got into the cracked area and silenced it. (Crack was
just outboard of the inner bearing race.) After waiting at the light
with no cars coming in any direction I had decided to run the red
since it's a very sketchy intersection, so luckily when I hit the
pavement I wasn't in danger of being run over. Plenty of witnesses
though, unfortunately.

Be careful and thorough in checking for cracks.

I'll have to try and remember that as it has never occured to me and
I'd never think to look for that- care to name the pedal that broke ?

They're Miche quill pedals. I'm not sure if they're original to the
bike they came to me on (Fuji Roubaix with '89 or '90 Shimano 105.
The pedals were the only Italian part on the thing) but they are
pretty well worn. When the bike came into my posession I took them
apart to clean and grease the bearings and the spindles seemed fine at
that point, but that would have been six or seven months ago and I'm
apparently a bit of a gorilla.

apparently.... thank you for your posts. you provide a perfect
example that it's always safer to cross the street when there is no
traffic as long as you stopped for the red

I had a ticking with an Ultegra outboard bearing crank awhile back.
It actually turned out that the pinch bolts on the left crankarm
simply needed a little more tightening. I'd been wary of over-
tightening them--too wary, as it turns out. Snugging them up solved
the problem.

If that doesn't work and it's not your pedals or something I'd pull
the BB, grease, and reinstall. If you're using the Shimano-supplied
BB tool it can be tough to get them tight enough without using an old
seatpost for leverage or something.

Install BB cups, crank spindle and left arm with lots of grease and
proper torque. Clicking outboard bearing BBs/cranks very common. DO
NOT just gun the left arm pinch bolts in..ya can kill the left rank
arm that way..use a torque wrench.

Yikes...ya mean the little cuircular tool used to install the left
cranarm? That is intended to me finger tight, no more. If you do use a
seatpost for leverage, you run the risk of killing the left bearing
AND proper torque on the pinch boilts is essential. or you can kill
the left arm.

No, of course not. I mean the tool for the actual bottom bracket
bearings.

And as far as the pinch bolts, I'm very careful not to over-torque.
As it turns out I was too careful, hence the clicking. Gently
snugging them up a bit quieted them down.
