  1. I have shimano 9 speed Dura ace STI shifters which are broken for the
second time (right shifter will not downshift). The first time it was
covered by warranty, but now I am afraid I have to buy another one.
They can't be repaired. A new one is $270. Can you believe a
replacement 10 speed dura ace STI shifters cost $430?
When my campy shifter broke my LBS charged $30 for a new spring and it
was fixed. Campy costs alittle more up front, but they aren't
disposable like shimano and are cheaper to maintain if you plan on
keeping your bike for a few years.

You're preaching to the choir. As a last resort, have you tried flushing
    with WD-40?

Yknow, really a lot of the time, STI/rapidfire failures are all about
one of the tiny springs being broken. They're not nearly as mysterious
inside, nor as difficult to deal disassemble/reassemble, as they're
made out to be. If it was mine I wouldn't proclaim it fully dead until
I understood what was wrong with it.

Having just built up a bike and opting to stay 9-speed since I already had
the drivetrain (sans shifters and FD), I think you can find 10-speed DA for
a lot less than $430. (I have a triple so stayed 9 speed since 10 is double
only still {?}, but Performance had '06 DA STIs on sale for LESS than I paid
    to order DA-9s {$299 + tax}.) Shop around.

9s DA down tube shifters can be had for less than $60 new from Nashbar,
iirc. Barcons probably aren't much more expensive.

Or maybe you can go for the Lance Armstrong look (yes, I know it's your
    RIGHT lever 🙂):

Hmmmm-the choir, like the next gent said. BUT material for material,
like aluminum-Centaur-costs WAY less than Ultegra, Even Veloce, same
innards is WAY less than even Tiagra or 105.

OEM and what people see in most bike shops means most riders know
little to nothing of Campagnolo, along with most bike shop owners,
service managers and wrenches in general. Much like PC and Mac
    computers-holy [censored]!!! I said it!!

SO, my suggestion is buy a set of ERGO 10s and a Campagnolo rear
derailleur. It will work fine and dandy with shimano 9s or 10s...

Except all you would have needed is the crank-no derailleurs needed for
    a compact crank.

  9. Purchase a Campy shifter and match it to your drivetrain with a shiftmate

Why do people continue to propogate this myth that Campagnolo costs

It depends on what you're comparing. Yes, DA 10 STI levers are more
expensive than Campy. However, start comparing things like derailleurs,
hubs, brakes, cranks/bb combo and you'll find Campy isn't that much cheaper.

Further, since Shimano "dominates" OEM, ultegra/105 and lower parts are more
cheaper as large mail order houses like Nashbar/Performance, Col Cyclists,
Excel, etc. buy parts at OEM pricing and resell at a cheaper price. Not
    really a myth....

Are there Tiagra 10s shifters, though?

No, but the OP said he has 9 speed DA, so it works well with his

hubs, brakes, cranks/bb combo and you'll find Campy isn't that much cheaper.

Record to Dura Ace, prices from Colorado Cyclist since they carry both.
short cage rear derailleur: Record CARBON $260. Dura Ace ALUMINUM
    $115.
front double derailleur: Record CARBON $105. Dura Ace ALUMINUM $92.
front hub: Record $80. Dura Ace $114.
rear hub: Record $170. Dura Ace $184.
Crankset and bottom bracket: Record ALUMINUM crank, bottom bracket:
    $330. Dura Ace ALUMINUM $365.
brake calipers: Record $250. Dura Ace $227.
10 speed shifters: Record $310. Dura Ace $431.

Big difference in rear derailleurs and shifters. Opposite ways, and
different materials. With Dura Ace cranks being on sale they are not
much more expensive than Record. Its definitely a myth that Campagnolo
is more expensive than Shimano. Particularly when you actually look at
    the numbers.

They've always been expensive, heavy, fragile and overpriced. Campy
brifters are much lighter and cheaper.

Before STI, I mounted a Deore thumb shifter under the brake hood,
sticking up. Easy to reach from the hoods and the drops, lightweight,
protected in a crash, use any brake lever you want... and cheap.

Now I have modified Paul's Thumbies holding barend shifters in the same
position. They aren't as good as the MTB shifters, but better than STI,
IMO. I'm in the process of making my own mounts from scratch to get the
    ergonomics dialed better.

  17. Agree. Its good that you compared equal ALUMINUM cranks instead of the
overpriced Carbon cranks sold by Campy. Nevertheless, its interesting
that Shimano ALUMINUM ders are "as light", if not lighter, than Campy
    carbon versions.

Personally, I like mixing and matching. Since I still use 9 speed, I
mix Campy ergo levers, ders with Shimano 9 cassette, rear hub and
chain. Interestingly, my shimano cassette/rear wheel shifts "as well"
as my Campy cassette/rear wheel, go figure?! I use a mix Phil Wood
mag/ti bb with a cheapie 8 speed Shimano "compact" crank (RSX version),
    All of its works well!

When I thought my Tiagra 9 sp shifter was broken (turned out to be the
front der), I talked to the LBS about switching over to Campagnolo. I
reasoned that since Shimano has gone 10sp for 105 up, 9sp parts were
disappearing except for Tiagra which I don't really want.

The LBS, who doesn't seem to like Campagnolo, says that even though the
STI shifters are expensive and disposable, in the long run it is cheaper
than buying Campagnolo chains and cassettes.

He had an old 9 sp Ultegra front der laying around, and since the
shifters were ok I went that route.

That makes sense for that situation. But don't be afraid to go with the Campy
shifters and work the rest of it out. You could go to a 9s Mirage Ergo and rear
der for about $200 and still shift that Shimano chain and cassette. Veloce 10s
Ergos hubbubed to the Shimano rear der would also answer it.

Cable pull is the same, I think. You shouldn't need to reroute any cables.
