Shimano still making it??

I have been asking myself the same question, and after consulting a lot of
web shops in Denmark, Germany and England, my impression is, that
cassettes and chains are still being produced. Bottom brackets, STIs,
hubs and chainwheels are rarely found on the stock lists. I plan to keep
my 9 speed bike running for at least another three years. So I buy spare
parts, when I find them on sale, to protect my investment in STI and
Flight Deck. I have a spare crank set, with chain wheels, and I am on the
look for at bottom brachet 6503.

for bb's you presumably mean octalink? can get 105's no problem. can
get 9-speed tiagra cassettes no problem either.

for bb's you presumably mean octalink? can get 105's no problem. can
get 9-speed tiagra cassettes no problem either.

We are using more Sram 9s cogsets..nice quality and less $..Chains,
either shimano or Sram..105 BBs...STIs are getting scarce. DA only, no
more single right 9s levers of anykind except DA..

Is this due to supply problems or cessation of manufacture? Does it
seem that Shimano is forcing upgrade to 10spd more hurriedly than they
have any of their prior groupos (7 to 8; 8 to 9)?

Calls to Quality Bike parts, probably ther largest importer of shimano
in the US, many 6500/6503 items are listed as 'discontinued' by
shimano. When DA and Ultegra went to 9s, 8s stuff stopped being made
in the same year so 9s stuff has actually been made a wee bit longer
but, no doubt, 10s is going to be the 'norm' for road bike stuff, for
good or ill. Whether orf not it's a 'good' idea is the subject of
another thread. Unique, propriatary designs, IMO, are never a good
thing for the consumer tho. Octalink is a good example. Too bad they
never licensed the design to anybody else, like Phil Wood, so the BBs
could continue to be made. Like they do for my 20 yr old C-Record
cranks and freewheel drivetrain.

other manufactures continue to support 8 and 9-speed road and 7 and 8-
speed ATB.

Will Shimano keep on making 8 and 9-speed bar end shifters?

The Jtek ShiftMate is a wonderful device... mix and match your
shifters derailleurs and cassettes almost at will given the right
ShiftMate model.

I use one to go from a Campy 9 speed shifter to Shimano MTB derailleur/
cassette. Works as well as any all Campy system I've tried.

There is a model that allows use of 10 speed shifters with 9 speed
cassette - so the lack of 9 speed shifters isn't that big of a deal,
other than the ridiculous prices of the 10 speed shifters!
