It's anot just tiagra. Bad wheels get built even with quality comonents and stuff rust.

I have tiagra on my lemond tourmalet and it works fine. the bike came with a bad BB but the bike shop replaced it and everything has been fine since. not always the cleanest shifting but it gets the job done.

I used to have Tiagra and had no problems with it. It's now on my wife's bike and still going strong, but is slowly being upgraded to Ultegra and various components reach the end of their life.

Well stuff just rusts hey, have an old bike with dura ace brakes on it now these brakes are at least 15 yrs old not one bit of rust on them, tiagra is 7 month old ish and it's rusting hmmmmm ! Thing i will say is it does work fine just not happing with bottom bracket rings rusting and brake screws rusting. The bike shop suggested replacing my bb with an ultrega one at a cost of €30 but i'm thinking why should i pay to replace something that i think should be under warrenty, already had to pay €25 to get the back wheel rebuilt.

Where do you keep this bike when you're not riding it? Stuff rusting after 7 months would suggest that it's not being kept somewhere dry rather than being related to the quality of the stuff itself.
On the wheel issue, I had to ditch a pair of Mavic Cosmos after only about 500km's, with no crashes. I picked up a flat spot on the rim which can't be fixed....wheels just get damaged, another guy could go 5000km's on the same wheels and just need a couple of spokes adjusted along the way.

I'm storing the bike in a garage same place as the old bike with the rust free 15 yr old dura ace brakes so it can't be storage. Got wet a few times when i was out on the bike but surely the groupset should be able to take a bit of rain ? As for the wheels well they're grand since. Guess i'll just have to save up for a proper bike !

I rode a Sora-equipped bike here in rainy old Ireland, right through winter and never saw a spot of rust apart from some surface stuff on the chain. Sounds like you got unlucky with that one.....good luck with the next one!

Thats nice first bike i buy when i start back cycling is a lump of [censored] !!! Well don't worry the next bike will have Ultrega on it at least, guess i may just ride what i have for the next yr and hope it doesn spontaniously combust !!!

I don't have much experience with Tiagra (although I will, because it's on the gf's bike), but I will say that I've had awful luck with Trek wheels. It's like the machine that builds them was dropped out of a truck or something. My first set of Trek road wheels would go out of true between every ride, and when I finally decided to loosen and retension all the spokes, some were loose enough to turn by finger and the others were impossibly tight. My next set of Trek wheels came on my Trek mtn bike, and they weren't much better. Coupled with my "never miss a tree" riding style, I ended up just replacing them after the first season.

They're the only wheels I've ever had problems with.

With the groupset thing, Ultegra has various advantages over Tiagra but I'm not sure that extra rust-proofing of screws and bottom bracket cups is one of them. With the prices we have to pay in this country for anything bike related, I'd try and figure out what's causing the rust before changing the bike. Maybe a bit of WD-40 on the affected areas will clear it up and it won't come back?

I've got an 04 1200 with Tiagra and it's been fantastic. Done a couple of thousand kilometres on it and haven't even had to adjust any gear or brake cables. It's just worked for me. I've had one spoke snap, but I'm 6'5" and 15.5 stone so I'm not that suprised.

The only place where there has been a little rust has been in the screws that hold the bottle cage (as water sits in here after I wash it if I'm not careful) but this is easily taken off by scrubbing them with a toothbrush. Saying that I am very strict about cleaning all my bikes after they have been out, so rust never gets an opportunity to get a hold.

rode my tiagra bike all spring through snow and rain without washing it or anything and only ended up with some spot rust on the chain. all the other parts were fine. maybe they messed up on the coating of yours or something.

Think i'll agree with spacefuzz maybe they did make an [censored] of the coating or something on mine, think i'll just ride the [censored] outta it then sell it for peanuts when i get me Pinarello or Colnago !! Already tried to sell it and wasn't getting anywhere near the price i thought i should get for it.

Just take better care of your bike, lube all the pivot points, screws and the chain regularly.

I lube my bike up weekly or after a rainy ride and I wash it once or twice a month.

I have a 2003 Trek 2000 with 105. I had a problem with the headset, which the bike shop replaced with an FSA headset. I'm 6', 185 lbs, the wheels have never gone out of true. After approx 5000 km there is not a spec of rust.

My Dura Ace 7700 9spd STI shifters each have a rusting screw on the underside, as do my 105 9spd shifters (same screw in fact, I bet it's the same part). Don't be too hard on your Tiagra.

I had similar problems with the (machine built) back wheel on my 2003 Giant TCR2, until a 4WD kindly killed it.
