Great point. I could see the tire blowing up as the UPS driver runs for
cover thinking it's a terrorist attack.

the tires too.

Its not considered a compressed gas. No UN number (HAZMAT designator) would
be supplied.

Personal preference. Would probably help protect the shipment (wheels)

If it were we'd all have to be hazmat certified in order to handle them...

(not much call for the general populace to be hazmat certified, ya' know)

This, and making sure there is enough packing material supporting the
spokes/rims to keep the hubs 'floating' (translation- keep the damn things
from bashing the bottomg of the box.

Check with your LBS's for wheel boxes. Put a couple layers of cardboard
between them to keep them from bashing together. Keep the tires inflated,
they aren't going to "explode"! Though they may not fit in boxes sized for
wheelsets. Let insurance take care of the rest.

If your really worried about it, put "storage air" in them. ;^)

Check the spoke tensions before hand - a well trued wheel is harder to bash
out of shape, and if they're trued up right before they're shipped you
definitely have a claim.

also, be wary of bent axles! Get some hub protectors from your LBS - they
come on all new bikes, so you shouldn't have a hard time finding them.
They're just little plastic discs that pop over or into the axle to protect
the ends from bashing through the box.

Keep in mind that a box that isn't "professionally packed" can have problems
with getting insurance claims - so I'd swing by your LBS and have a guy just
sign a receipt or something saying they supervised or did the packing.
Can't hurt to cover yer ass... much better than getting nailed in it!
