Shock absorbing stem?

Not anymore. Girvin Flex stem or the other 'Frankenstem', suspended
stems with springs and bumpers, in the early 90s...Get a front
suspension or use less air in your tires, with fatter tires.

You can get them on ebay, I have a softride stem on one of my
bikes, but it doesn't make a lot of sense for a commuter bike.

The softride makes sense when you want to add suspension cheaply to
a bike that doesn't have it. For a MTB commuter, fat slicks will
provide a much better overall ride.

Few fellows from the touring phred list got em that way, so my guess is they
are still made but most likely not in the USA anymore

Yes, I was glad to hear they started making those again, unfortunatly,
they are all quill type (threaded forks), and they still have the
chintzy looking bar clamp.

I was really hoping for a model with a removeable front for easier
packing of the bike.

BikeNashbar now has a $5 quill stem with suspension (rubber bumpers).
Thinking of buying one just to play with it.
