Shoe question

I have a pair of Ecco shoes, nice wide fitting, slipper
comfort, leather uppers/compo soles, which I bought from a
shop called Briggs. I bought them for 'best', since they
cost £60.99, but wear them all the time really for pavement
walking. Just checked and found to my horror that the tread
has almost worn smooth at the centre of the soles and part
of the heels.

I've only had the buggers since September 2002!

I haven't worn Clarks for decades - I assume they are
more fashion items and as such are designed for a short
working life.

I don't do much walking in my work shoes as they seem to
bring on aches quicker than my walking boots which I wear
most of the rest of the time. On my work shoes the cobbler
put on rubber soles when they needed re-soleing which last
forever and give better grip than any other material I've
used. So I'd recommend that for the sole. It might also be
worth looking at Superfeet or Sorbothane insoles, although
if you can wear something like approach shoes to work I'd
imagine they are the best bet.

I've had a pair of black Rockport shoes/boots for the past 4
years or so, and they've never let me down. They cost about
£120 (so a bit pricey!), but apart from replacing a laces a
few times and a bit of shoe-blackener, they've been fine (so
worth their money in my opinion). I wear them every day for
walking to work, and they look similar to these ones:

Dunno - I've had a pair so long I can't trace when I bought
them, but they're brown, so I haven't worn them too often.
Clarkes are always a good fit for me.

Footnote: I bought a pair of Nike trainers about 6 or 7
years ago for £75 to teach my son a lesson about buying
'labels'. I had to eat my words, they are all leather and
apparently indestructible, whereas the plastic ones used to
last me about a year. They came out of the washing machine
quite well too, which I was told by the youth who sold me
them would ruin them.....

I think you get what you pay for in footwear.

eight to twelve months. YMMV of course.

Hopalong to <shoesinternational.co.uk> and see the Alfred
Sargent range. I especially recommend the Kendal style
with commando soles at £102.00. Mine have had some stick
in the past 12 months.....still looking good. And no
wearing in hassle.

Ditto, almost, with a pair of Camel boots. Had them about 5
years, worn every day, for work and leisure. The original
sole gave up after 3 yrs, and the replacement vibram sole is
wearing well too.

Can't seem to find anywhere that stocks them now - I'm
beginning to wonder if they make 'em any more.
