  1. I just started lifting in earnest a few days ago. Today, after getting out
of the shower, I noticed for the first time a sizable bump, about the size &
shape of a half golf ball, in the middle of my torso just below the rib
cage. I've never seen it before, so needless to say, I'm a touch freaked
out. Because of the timing of it, I'm wondering (hoping) if it might be
related to the weight lifting. It's hard to the touch and for all I know,
it's a bone, part of my rib cage maybe. Maybe the bottom of my sternum?
But even if it is, why would it be jutting out? Is it possible it's
swelling of some sort? For what it's worth, I have been mostly doing chest
and back work so far. In case that has anything to do with anything.

I know a simple visit to the doctor might answer this question, but I'm not
insured so before I start jumping through hoops to get insured, I thought
I'd ask here in case this sounded like a common side effect a beginner might
experience. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Google xiphoid process. It juts out on some people.

After a couple days of lifting, his xiphoid process is suddenly jutting
    out?

    Interesting theory.

I hope he hasn't been inspecting eggs on abandoned alien spacecraft.

Okay, here's my theory: He's always had a jutting xiphoid process. He starts
lifting a few days ago and now he's paying very close attention to any
changes in his physique. Lo and behold, "what the hell is this thing!".

    Or...what? Alien life form?

    This is mfw - it's a toomah.

Or he should just butch up and see a doctor. If he can't afford that,
maybe he has a friend or relative who's a nurse or PT who'll at least
look at it for him. Or we could have a big, political discussion about
why he's uninsured. Or how his life would be better if he owned a dog
or a gun or squatted ATG twice a week.

Hey, it's whacky Friday. I've been using the Cybex rowing machine at
the Y - how strange is that? Maybe I should see a doctor.

  7. Nikko,
What about the possibility of a hernia? Given the written description
of this "bump" and the newly started weight lifting I would not rule
this out without seeing a doctor. A hernia would be less serious than
a tumor if that is what you are worried about. Half a golf ball is a
pretty big bump and I wouldn't write it off without a doctor's advice
since an untreated hernia could get serious. Maybe you could find a
free community clinic to get it checked out if money is a concern.
I have lifted for a long time and never had a bump half the size of a
golf ball coming out of my torso. The nearest thing to bumps this size
have came from getting kicked in the legs during soccer.
    Good Luck,
    James

This sounds serious enough to ignore getting insured. It's too late for
all that.Your frame of mind is worrying. Why don't you just go the
hospital and complain that it is worrying you? The worst thing you can
    do is nothing.Time is everything.Go immediatley.Go now.

  9. Hmm, not heard of this thanks for all the info.

Oh, horseshit. Wait...you're in the UK...uh...bollocks!

Nothing serious grows to half golfball size on the chest wall in two days.
He broke a blood vessel or bruised himself, probably bouncing the fool bar
off his chest. He has, what they call in the medical profession, an "owee
    boo boo".

I'm betting on this. I got a ventral hernia from weightlifting, a little
smaller than his but in just about the same place. Get it checked out.
