  1. i was thinking about buying an old (early 80s) bike that has a silstar
crank. it feels that the BB needs service but the net is totally unaware
of the brand. have they merged to another company, could i still find
spare parts? is it compatible mechanically to anything on the market?

buying a new bike is not preferred as there is no such design available
    currently: steel frame, road bars.

  2. Don't know the history of Silstar, but I have a couple of oldish Claud
    Butler bikes with Silstar chainsets.

Mine have an obsolete BCD (118mm springs to mind, but don't hold me to
it), so spare rings are hard to come by, but this isn't your problem
    at the moment.

BB will probably be rather longer axle than for more modern cranks
(mine take 121mm BB axle), but still readily available. Standard
square taper, no no preoble there.

Cup and cone BB parts are often interchangeable. When fixing one of my
above mentioned bikes I needed to repace the fixed cup (happened to
have one in my spares box), but kept the rest of the original BB.

In short, no problem. If the BB needs replacing you should be able to
readily source a new one. Only if you want to replace individual
chainrings might you have a problem.

  3. Silstar became Pinnacle, but only the fishing gear division seems to have
    survived.

They were bought up by SR (who bought SunTour later). I used to have
    some "SR Silstar" cranks.

  6. So does this mean that Silstar cranks won't fit an ordinary bottom
    bracket?

I am worried now ;-). If this is so then any bottom bracket problems
on my tandem could turn out rather expensive.

my current one is otherwise ok but it has fauber crank, thus i cannot use
clipless pedals. needs a crank/BB modification.

    right.

I'm a bit confused about the crank affecting clipless pedals, aside from
    possibly non-standard thread size.

fauber (one piece steel crank) has 1/2" threads. 3 piece cranks use
    9/16". 1/2" thingies are obsolete.

    solutions:
    1) fix the fauber thread. expensive, risky due to reduced material.
    2) fix the pedal by rethreading or assebling the latches. maybe not.
    3) get a modification set fauber to 3 piece. hard to find.
    4) get a adapter 1/2 to 9/16. adds offset.
    5) find a new bike.

    i'm working on #3 and #5.
