Viewpoint #1: It costs £1 actual postage and £1 actual cost for the
jiffy bag, bubblewrap, etc, so why are they charging £5?

bag. It takes an hour to wrap the package, address it, get to the post
office, stand in line, pay the money, and get back, so that's £4.85 (@
minimum wage) - plus we've lost a member of staff during that time so
there is also potential lost custom). So why are they only charging £5
for nearly seven quid's expenditure?

I don't really see what the problem is here: nobody is /forcing/ anyone
to shop with SJS.

It is not illegal to charge more than the MSRP in a free market, and the
higher price may reflect on SJS's warehousing being rather more
expensive due to having a whole load more stuff in stock. I imagine
Brompton have rather fewer seatposts on offer than SJSC, for example
(they only need to stock 3 types). As another example, I generally pay
more at Tesco than I do at Lidl, but I tend to shop at Tesco because I
don't subsequently have to cycle up the road to a different shop and I
find it Really Useful that they have everything I want under one roof.

In other words, it's perfectly normal for some degree of price variation
in a free market.

Also Robin Thorn is not the easiest man in the world to get on with.

But they do know touring and touring bikes, they do have an amazing
selection of stuff other people simply don't have, and they are very
reliable. You pays yer money and takes yer choice.

I used to know a bloke that ran a small local bakery. A little old lady
got very huffy while buying one of his cakes. He asked her what was the
problem. She said it was outrageous that he was charging 20p more than
Gregg's bakery for such cakes. "Why don't you go to Gregg's then," he
asked, only to be told "But I don't like their cakes."

they could get the same item
for less in another bike shop - Why don't you buy it there then?, Oh, it's

The only problem comes when SJSC are the only supplier of some type of
obsolete kit - then you have to bend over and take it. I do buy from
them sometimes, but they're not my first choice by a long stretch.

Well I won some ebay auctions from them. Many of the items sold for a
single penny including some nice tyres for my Giant Revive. I got some
spare Schwalbe cityjet tyres for only about £3-4 each and quite a few
other bits and pieces. I collected the items on the last day where
you could collect items at no charge, i.e. you just pay the end
auction price. The day after every ebay win costs £1 to collect I
think. Anyway I was well impressed with my haul including some nice V
brakes for a couple of quid and other stuff.

I still paid £4.99 for a set of front wheel ball bearings which were
top of the line though, probably meant for tandems. I had problems
with the caged bearings in my front wheel and I've basically gone from
one extreme to the other (i.e. [censored] quality to top end quality).
Anyway no funny noises from the front wheel anymore.

SJSC seem to be one of those shops where they charge as much as they
can for stuff but as soon as they decide to clear stuff its goes very
cheap.

The set of rechargable lights they do for £24.99 is excellent value.
They let me have a set for £19.99 when I bought my other stuff and I'm
very impressed with the quality of them for the money. Not dissimilar
to the £34.99 eurolight set in argos with a lead acid battery etc.
However a different design but if anything better quality.
