is chemically stable and pretty cheap. No need to mix potions or rinse
your dog in V8. If you have a dog it's cheap insurance to keep a bottle
in the trunk of your car.

There are indeed commercial products (spray bottle packaged) that work
wonders. I saw my niece use one on her dog after he'd been skunked (and
powerfully skunked, I might add) - the smell was greatly reduced
immediately. I was astonished when I saw it, being of the impression
that there was no cure for the problem except time.

IIRC, the bottle was labelled as a Monsanto product - and as organic,
which makes me doubt my memory, but that's what I recall.

After my wife's husky got skunked, a few moments of googling revealed
that mouthwash is often fairly effective - something that I can attest
to after giving the pooch a Scope shower at 2:00AM.

The following Skunk Smell Remover Formula is effective in removing skunk
smell from sprayed victims, as proven in an episode of MythBusters

1 U.S. Quart (approx 1 litre) of 3% hydrogen peroxide.
1/4 cup (approx 45ml) baking soda.
1 teaspoon (approx 5ml) liquid soap.

Directions: Mix together at time of usage, and apply foaming mixture to
affected areas.

How it works: The oxygen molecules emitted by the hydrogen peroxide and
baking soda reaction deactivate the smell molecules by binding to them and
rendering them inert.
The same thing can be accomplished by holding your pet or yourself in smoke
(not FLAMES) from a campfire or grassfire. The ions in the smoke neutralize
the odor-producing chemical.

Folklore also claims tomato juice to be a potent skunk smell remover. Tomato
juice has no chemical effect on the skunk smell, but it does have a distinct
odor of its own. According to the Indiana University School of Medicine:
The smell receptors in your nose bind the skunk odor so tightly that
eventually you stop smelling it so much. This is called "olfactory fatigue".
At that point, the tomato juice you've just bathed your pet with is a new
smell that your nose is not used to yet. After a while, though, the tomato
juice smell will go away and that skunk odor will come back.

It works best when used immediately after the dog gets sprayed, before
the oils in the spray can soak into the fur.

The first article I read about this specifically recommended Dawn dish
detergent because it was supposed to be particularly good at removing
the oils that hold the stink. That's what I've used the two times I've
tried this, but I don't know whether Dawn is really any better than
other detergents.
