small diameter pedal threads

Probably a childs pedal thread which is the only one I have come across
that is smaller than standard. Don't know of any clipless at all in

Prob. Same size as BMX threads, I never found anything other than
plastic pedals when I had a cheapo bike.

I think you may be right and i will have to just live with it. The only
trouble being my other bikes have clipless and when i ride the old mountain
bike i find myself lifting my feet off the pedals on the upstroke for a
couple of minutes as i am that used to riding clipless these days.

It is sometimes possible to take the axle out of one pedal and swap it
with another pedal (I know of people who have done it with MKS pedals to
get a detachable SPD for a Brompton). So you could look at seeing if
you can mount an SPD body on your current axle.

1/2" pedals are easy to obtain and IMMIC it would be easy to take
them apart and fit the clipless bits onto them.

TR is right, pedal spindles can sometimes be changed, though it might be a
tad awkward.

OTOH, what about fiting a cheap 'n cheerful chainset for which you'd be able
to use almost any available clipless pedals?

An example of which might be found on www.wiggle.co.uk ... 😉

If you do go this route, I'd also suggest a new bottom bracket might also be
necessary. The chainset and BB needn't come to more than £40, (Shimano
Alivio and CT92 BB) or get a decent set for your 'best' bike and use and old
set for the 'cheapie' bike. 😉

I would definately need a new bottom bracket as the original is somewhat
larger than a standard size for a road bike. I mentioned earlier in my OP
that this infernal machine has a one piece crank with a bottom bracket of
biblical proportions. I think I will look into the pedal axle scenario as
this could be the easiest option I have an old kids bike in the garage that
may have axles that fit the bill.
