Front suspension? Full suspension? I bought my 9 year old a rockhopper small frame (probably a
different name in the UK) front suspension. Not big $$$ but nice and strong. It's also nice and back
heavy so he lands on the ass side of the bike every time (doesn't bunny hop very well yet).

I know you'd probably all say that he should get a decent MTB and be done with it, but at that
age, if he doesn't have the "right" bike, then he's not going to ride it, and that's the
important thing.

So, an recommendations for a small, possibly 24" wheel jump-style bike? His parents aren't on a
tight budget as such, but probably wouldn't want to pay thousands, as he's going to grow out of it
eventually. I've looked at a few Kona and Specialized kids models, and they may do the trick, but
am keen to find out if there are any other options.

Oh, and yes I will take him to a LBS and get him to try some. Anyone know of any good ones in
either Buckinghamshire or Monmouthshire/Cardiff? That's in the UK BTW :-)

orientated (American translation: oriented) is where it's at I think. I do need to speak to him and
find out more...

That would have been my answer. At that age most kids thrash the living bejeezus out of things like
bikes and the less to break off the better. Not so much from a cosmetic POV but more from a
maintenance POV. Plus he can add alot of stuff onto it for tricks if he wants to and importantly
he'll be able to use it at bmx parks and on ramps and do urban stuff on it. Not life threatening if
it gets stolen either. Versatile, robust, cheap and easy.

Yep. I just bought my son a used BMX. An I can't get him off it! Your nephew sounds like my son in
that he wasn't really wasn't interested in a bike "like dads", so a 300.00 mtb bike was out of the
question. Definetly check out the LBS for "used" bmx bikes. I got my boy a nearly new Trek, and like
I said, I can hardly get him off of it. (but that's o.k by me!)

Another nice thing about a BMX is that he won't outgrow it. BMX is as close as you can get to one
size fits all.

Sounds like he wants a BMX bike, which most kids at that age seem to favor. Or a hardtail freeride
bike maybe.

I'd look at the average quality BMX bikes at any LBS. At 11 yo, he'll outgrow (depending on what
size you get him, of course) or break whatever you choose to get him anyway, unless he really gets
into it, in which case he'll probably know exactly what he wants, find a way to get it, and learn to
maintain/repair it.

I think I was 11 when I got my first BMX as well. Rode it everywhere.. local trails, urban,
backyard, pools, whatever and wherever.
