Smelly dishwasher

Did the contents of the dishwasher include any plastic items? It's very odd
for hard dishes to absorb a smell, unless they're very old and the finish is
chipped.

The dishwasher drain hose needs a high loop in it, so that the
sink/disposal does not drain back into the dishwasher. Yes it is a health
hazard. This will be the problem more than 9 times out of 10.

I would have added a cup of chlorine bleach to the second cycle.

I wouldn't do that (ordinary dishwasher detergent has bleach in it).

A while back my dishwasher had a funky smell also. I called Whirlpool and
they told me to get some Tang orange drink crystals and sprinkle it all in
the dishwasher and to do that a few times. I had to run it 3 times and
thankfully the smell had gone away & never returned. There was a nice
orange scent after every load. very refreshing.

Now, how many times have I read that in Heloise. It's not
even just the fragrance, there is acid that helps with the process.
Thanks for remembering that, and I'm going to buy Tang for that
purpose just for a preventive measure.

I just ground a lemon in my sink disposal yesterday, that helps
on that end.

I've done that, too, or just orange rinds. The nicest scent is to grind
mint from the garden in the summer, not the long stems because they can
get wound around the blades (like celery), but short pieces or a handful
of leaves.

I have a Whirpool too, and just this afternoon I smell a bad odour. Now I
ask you waht means "Tang orange drink crystals", if is this the remedy.
BTW I think it happened because I didn't put salt (I have used tablet of
soap with salt inside).

what Tang is. It's the drink of astronauts, of course:

I usually use vinegar and baking soda to refresh bathroom and kitchen
drains.
So, why not try vinegar and/or baking soda to refresh a dishwasher, along
with the outgoing pipes?

Kraft doesn't list the ingredients of Tang online, but I suspect
other than Citric Acid, it's mainly a deodorant rather than
anything that kills the source of the smell.

I couldn't find tang so I used a no name orange cystal drink powder. I
don't drink that stuff & neither do my kids so I just bought it for my
dishwasher hahaha. But it really did work.

I have seen it was exported in Canada , Great britain and Mexico...but not
in Italia 🙁
One of its names was "Sun Up". We have a drink (A sort of lemonade) called
