  1. Woke up early this morning and it was light, very light. 2 inches of snow on
the ground and more coming down.

Think - Riding in snow on slicks is not good.
Think - I could walk in to work.
Think - I have to go to the hospital campus this afternoon and then be home
    early..

Check time, and off to the garage..
Quick tyre swap that would have a F1 pit crew laughing their socks off.. And
one broken tyre lever. It is the first time I have used the Specialised tyre
levers I bought ages ago for the seat bag toolkit and they are [censored].

And on with the tyres.[1] I couldn't find the ski goggles but did grab the
hiking gaiters and the H*****t (conditions looked like they might warrant
    it).

    And off to work.

Most of the traffic was somewhat petrified of doing anything. Please put
    your fingers in your ears:

OI, YOU! TRY GETTING ALL THE SNOW OFF YOUR WINDOWS SO YOU CAN SEE WHERE YOU
    ARE GOING.

    Bah!

Anyhow, the roads were not too bad, mostly with clear tyre tracks and the
traffic was tentative so I was moving pretty quickly, enjoying the staccato
pattter of the tyres [1] on the bare road and the excellent grip on the ice.

Big grin day, especially when people think you are mad..

Nathan had a legitimate excuse to be using my [1] 'bent this morning for the
college run. Woke to a couple of inches of snow on the ground and snow
showers with large clumps of the white stuff falling out of the sky. It
took him an hour & a half to cycle the thirteen miles to Fakenham this
morning. When he rang to say he'd got there okay, the route to school was
described as "interesting" and a "If I'd have been on the bike, I'd have
fallen off today. Glad I was on the 'bent."

    Cheers, helen s

[1] In name only. For all practical purposes, my 'bent has been filtched by
the offspring... During the recent half-term week, he had his mates around,
and there was a conflab in the garage around said 'bent and I could hear
    mutterings of "It is cool."

I find the third wheel *really* slows me down in snow:

    Normal commute time: 10 minutes
Commute time late last night: 1 hour 45 minutes

The roads up at the top of the town were basically one giant,
interestingly hilly, and totally deserted, skid pan. Best fun I've had
    in yonks.

I use my mountain bike, with fat soft knobbly tyres in the
snow. Obviously you don't have enough bikes. Although we know that
this is always true, however many you have :-)

Yup - ski goggles are the biz for cycling in the snow, although - as I
discovered when I was skiing last week - leaving them in the bottom of
your pannier all year without a cover isn't necessarily the best way
to look after them 🙂 Unfortunately I think I need to buy news ones.

Not enough /sno/ around here to be interesting yet, though the side road in
front of Larrington Towers has enough sheet ice to teach thoughtless
motorists the value of ABS on sheet ice at very low speeds, which is this:
    0.

I have been using the fixer and am looking forward to the serious /sno/ we
    are promised tonight...

Absolutley - last winter when it suddenly got icy, I got nearly all
teh way in to work when I had to turn round and go most of teh way
back and forth for a bit.

Still got to work earlier than most of those who used tin boxes,
    though.

Sadly, so far this year I haven't found any ice longer than a couple
    of metres.

so he probably spent most of the time skidding it around deliberately ,
just because he can (I missed the snow this morning, being away on
business last night - whimper, whimper). Hopefully there will be some
to play on tomorrow morning to go to work

  10. Those tyres look the business, but probably not for me since most of my
commute is in London where the snow never gets a chance to settle -
can't imagine they would be so good on tarmac.

However, last night we had snow followed by rain, so the roads on the
way to the station this morning were treacherously icy and I ended up
walking part of the way. The car tyre tracks were mostly compacted ice
    and very skiddy indeed.

I found the best way to stay upright when actually on the bike was to
select a very low gear (ie granny ring) and to stop pedalling when
    cornering.

Any other useful hints and tips for riding technique in current
    conditions?

Having spent some time gritting around the house this evening you
are welcome to have mine. The white mank is only beneficial on
Christmas day as far as I'm concerned. It can start falling on
Christmas Eve and thaw by Boxing Day.

Two sets of wheels. When your main wheels are looking a bit sorry put the
snow tyres on for use a few days a year. Much better than having to swap
    tyres.

I wish.. The previous wheels are seriously knackered and not even
rideable. The current wheels will be replaced soon, probably by dint of
changing the whole bike. I'll keep the old ones then for winter. Maybe
turn the old frame into something interesting.. like a spincycle..

Yes, but if I'm not mistaken you don't go out to play on a trike ;-)

Try 42'C you lucky sods. Air-con is great, but it's no substitute for
    proper hypothermia!
