  1. Interesting new machine, inventor claims to solve the problems with
    the bicycle:

    1. bicycles are slow,
    2. saddles are bad.

    This new contraption:

    1. is fast,
    2. has no saddle.

    http://www.bodyriteltd.com/

Inventor is looking for a "few million" in investor money. Any
    takers?

Are you kidding? This guy and his /invention/ are crazy! Could you see
one of those things rolling down a main road? And people look at
    bicycles as road hazards!

Wierd, when I stopped by the shop last fall, they sold me the comfy
    fast bike.

What a huckster in the video. He might as well be proclaiming the
    benefits of spoon-guard.

Well that guys invention or whatever you want to call it, is just
slightly more useful than spoonguard. Not much but a little. It's just
another take on a human powered vehicle. I am SURE its going to go
nowhere real fast. History has shown that bi-cycles are the way things
will be now and in the immediate future. There is a very small market
for other types of hpvs. If he gets any funding / investors it will be a
miracle if he is a good inventor and has other inventions perhaps he can
use some of the profits from those other invention to fund that rolling
cage contraption, more like a Rube Goldberg machine than anything else.

Is it April 1st already? The recumbent already solves those two
problems, and improves aerodynamics to the point where, with a
fairing, 50mph is feasible for an elite athlete. The only way that
thing is going to hit the claimed 50mph, with or without a fairing, is
by throwing it off a cliff, which is exactly what you'd be doing with
your money if you invested in it.

    NO.

    From the web site:

"Gearing that allows an operator to rotate the wheels four times each
pedal cycle, or at a 1:4 ratio while at the comfortable cadence rate
will produce a speed upwards of 50mph."

"The conventional bicycle is unstable and dangerous on the road. The
rider is vulnerable in traffic no matter how experienced. It is the
height of danger to be balanced on two inch-wide tires with nothing
between the driver and road objects."

You would think one of his friends would sit him down and give him a
reality check. he was correct about one thing..bicycles replacing
horses. Yep, cheaper, lighter, easier to ride.

The 50mph claim seems to just be based on it having a really high gear.
Assuming 100rpm at the pedals, any normal bike can get that gear: it just
    needs a 79t chainring and 11t rear.

And instead of saddle - it has a HARNESS! Whoever thinks that a harness is inherently more comfortable than a bicycle seat needs to have either his head or his pelvis examined...

And did any of you watch the videoclip of that thing moving? It looked kind of fun, but quite scary too. Steering not separate from propulsion/braking? Sure, it works for wheel chairs, but that doesn't mean it'd be my choice of arrangement. And the way the front wheel lifts when he moves forward - wonder how much of a stop is needed before the operator would flip over backwards instead of pushing himself forward?

Main advantage I can see is that most people's collection of bikes and 'bents would appear neat and easily stowed in comparison with this rig.

NASA might be interested in a human powered vehicle that could cover
rough terrain in low gravity. A development of this contraption might
    conceivably be suitable for that.

I've had some experience with a sort-of similar vehicle:
    http://www.simpleorganicsolutions.com/tomato.html
The Body Rite really needs that harness, as the center of gravity isn't very
far from the center line of the wheel axis. On any sort of upward slope at
all, that front wheel won't just lift off; it'll go clear over. Without a
tail wheel, this thing won't be able to climb at all. Of course, after it
flips over, the front wheel will become a tail wheel, so you might be able
to climb if you could pedal/crank while hanging upside down in the harness
and looking behind you. Brake balance will be very critical, too. If you
had to stop quickly, any uneven braking force would put the vehicle into a
sharp turn. Having the brake cables routed through rotating connections
    seems risky, too

This reminded me of the Monowheel:

    http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/MUSEUM/TRANSPORT/motorwhl/motorwhl.htm

My own favourite is the 400mph Christie Monowheel from 1923, with
    independently-powered gyroscopic steering rudders.

I don't know why it never caught on.

Around the other bikes at the bike rack.

  19. I notice this guy never showed how it performs when braking. Does it have
