I noticed on a sale site that the Sora triple cranks were sold as 8-speed. Is there a problem running a 9speed setup with this? I currently have an 8speed system with a mountain crankset and flat bars and am working on converting to a 9speed with drops.
I plan on using: Existing chain (8sp new) Existing RDer (105 triple - new) Sora crankset (triple) Ultegra integrated shifters (new) Shimano 105 triple FDer (new)
As you can see, Im trying to maximize my bang for the buck. Do you see any problem with the combo as shown?

It will work fine, Dan.
There is nothing about Sora, or any other "8-speed" cranks, that dictates the number of sprockets on the rear.

If you are going to be using a 9-speed cassette, you will need a 9-speed chain.

I understand that, but I was under the (probably mistaken) impression that 9-speed chainrings were ever so slightly thinner and may require a different chain??

My wife's bike is set up with a 'seven speed' RSX 46-36-26 crankset with nine speed shifters/cassette/chain. I had a problem initially getting a fast shift to the granny, but I believe that was due to a fat (1-3/8"😉 seat tube and the FDR curvature rather than the chainrings. You'll need a nine speed chain with a nine speed cassette, though.

Your impression, at least in my experience, isn't mistaken at all.
I found the Sora middle chainring on our tandem was too wide to fit a Shimano HG53 9 speed chain. At two particular teeth (opposite each other, near some ramps), the chain would "stick" and not release. I solved the problem by buying Ultegra 9 speed chain rings.

Dan- The Sora chainrings are made of steel and are thinner than other "8Speed" rings. I am using a Sora double crankset on my cross bike, which I revamped with 9Speed bar ends. The only other parts I changed out were the chain and the cogset - both 9 speed of course.
You should have no problems, but do get a new 9Speed chain.

Yes, I missed that. You need a 9-speed chain, which is a little narrower, for your 9-speed cassette, but not needed because of the chainrings.

Thanks folks. Looks like I have a good combo then. Ordering tomorrow. I'll update with results - not than anyone really cares <smile>.
