Looking to reduce Q factor on my current triple Sora bike by approx 10mm. Am I right in thinking that a Sora double with correct BB length would acheive this?
Also thinking that another way would be to get a BB approx 10mm shorter (107mm) and dispense with inner ring on triple to give me desired reduction in Q factor.

You can get 6 mm by putting in 3 mm pedal washers. I did this for years and thosands of miles of riding w/o problem. If you use a MTB pedal/shoe, with the cleat all the way toward the instep, you will also get a few mm on each side.

Any suggestions please

Assume that the Sora crank is a square taper..Look at the small ring attach stubs to frame clearance..that's how much you can reduce spindle length. I'm guessing not much. A double with appropriate BB will do this, for gearing maybe a compact crank?

Yep, Square Taper crank . Can just get 5mm (therefore total 10) with stub to frame clearance so this is an option however gears a bit high. I like the compact option but would my 8 speed chain and cass rule this out as all compacts seem to be narrow 9/10 speed rings...?

No problem at all using a 8s chain on an otherwise '10s' crank..non- issue, we install compact of various manufacturers, FSA, Campag, shimano, Ritchey on 8s 'systems'.

I thought he wanted to reduce the Q factor, not increase it.

Thanks - this is good news. Ive seen some cheap campag compacts so set up would be campag chainset and BB with Shimano 8 speed chain and casette.........without probs....
