AFAIK, nobody is importing them in the US currently other than
Ital-tecno, and they do small numbers. I had a thread about this
recently. They had a sole US sales agent, ProNet in Washington, who
didn't even carry the whole line by a long shot, and they don't exist
anymore I think. Torelli has rims made by Ambrosio that I think use the
same extrusions (not positive). I have a Torelli Triumph, which is
either the same or really similar to the Excellight, but it's kind of
stupid because in order to put a counterbalancing weight in the rim,
they have a hole drilled that's way larger than a Schraeder valve.

MSRP "discourages" shops from becoming an Ambrosio dealer, I agree.

OTOH, they probably make more margin selling on Ebay than they do
selling to a shop, who then resells it to a consumer. So, perhaps they
are content with that avenue of distribution.

The internet has changed the rules. Tough times ahead for the average
LBS (n.b., "average LBS"; well run shops like Chain Reaction, Harris,
Vecchio's, and Yellow Jersey will continue to do well [I hope] ).

Are these good rims? I rode a set for several years and they looked
pretty and stayed true, but the eyelets rusted out and the brake
surfaces were concave. So I got my money's worth, but would like a POV
on whether to get them again, or a different rim like an Open Pro.

Might look at DT rims, the new 1.1. I just replaced a rear Ambrosio
that had pulled out about 1/2 of it's eyelets. I understand if you

That's good to hear, Peter. I volunteered as a wrench at a charity ride
on Sept. 8/9/10 and was once again reminded of how widespread crappy
service work is (I saw bikes from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas,
Tennessee, and Texas), even on some pricey bikes. From what I saw, alot
of these shops deserve to tank.

Ambrosio are as good as or better than Open Pro rims, and
many models cost less.

The common theme with a new car these days is buy it and when the
warranty is over(or before sometimes), find a good wrench that is NOT
in a dealer...the good ones create their own service lace, like we did,
using Hoshi Motors, Swedish Motors, Verners, others as examples.

We see some pretty poor wrenching here in the republic as well.

Depends on the rider and what he wants to do with the wheels...his/her
riding style, heavy, light, not necessarily weight-based. Campagnolo
hubset, Velocity, DT or Mavic rims, double butted spokes, with
appropriate spoke gauge and numbers and rim for the rider. For
whizbangery, the only after market hubset we like is DT...

Noticed a couple times over the last few months you've mentioned the DT
1.1 rims. I've been riding Aeroheads front and rear on a couple bikes
for about 20K miles. Nice solid rims but curious how the DT 1.1s
compare.

I expect they are equivalent for all intents and purposes but curious
if you favor one over the other. I'm likely to build a powertap rear
over the winter and have not picked a rim for it yet.

because I did not trust them, and because I know a
mechanic of impeccable probity.
