  1. Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone can tell me about Stage 1 of the South Beach
diet. Must one stay on it for a full 2 weeks? What happens if you
stay on it for a shorter period of time (aside from less of an initial
    weight loss)?

    Thanks,

    Alan

They come and repossess your copy of the book.

Seriously, if you can cut out starches and sugar, you'll get the
benefits without the gimmick. Some folks need that two week period to
get rid of cravings, that's why Dr. Atkins created it.

Just my $0.02, hunger can be cured, but never craving.

Low carb cures hungry but stop not craving.

Not how most of us experience it, but you're entitled to believe
    whatever works four you.

No, but it's best if one does.

You won't fully experience the appetite
and craving suppression that as far as
that diet is concerned is the tool you
use (fall back on) to address problems like
inconsistency (aka compliance or a problem
staying on plan). It's also intended to
break ones connection to fast acting carbs
and properly prepare them for the lifetime
of mostly slow acting carbs and lean protein
    sources to come.

I think it's the best thing that could
happen to a moderate carb diet. On a
moderate carb diet like South Beach or
The Zone one doesn't have the luxury of
    a strong appetite suppression (anorectic)
effect as they would on a lower carb diet.
Dr. Agatston understood that and added
stage one to his diet to deal with that
as well as other issues that can be part
of a moderate carb diet. If you understand
what it's for and how to use it, and you
don't have any initial cravings or discipline
issues, you can skip it--but I don't see
    any reason why you should.

I could not make it through the south beach stage 1 either. I have
lost a lot of weight and have gained tons of energy from Hebalife.
Check out my story I posted.

Stage 1 is really designed more to reduce or eliminate our cravings for
carbs than to simply cause more rapid weight loss. It worked for me! Every
other diet failed. I would eventually give in to those cravings and begin
to eat more and more desserts (and bread, pasta, etc.). This time, I stuck
*faithfully* to the first 2 weeks. In addition, I completely eliminated
sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, and flour of all types and have continued
that. However, I have diabetes, so that last sentence goes beyond SB.

The first 2 weeks really can become tiresome -- I think I was never so tired
of eggs and salads as during those 2 weeks, but it was well worth it to me.
I started in June of 2004 and am still with it. However, please note this:
If you get hungry, *be sure to eat.* Some diets tell you to "suffer through
it," but not SB. It's just that you need to eat the correct types of foods
(like lots of veggies). In fact, SB calls for so many veggies that many of
us made the mistake of eating *too little* in the first part of Phase 1 --
we just weren't used to all that bulk, but it's important.
