I'm scarily tempted, even being a long way from Dundee and never having tried
a remotely comparable machine. Just out of curiosity, and nothing to do with
my approaching birthday at all, roughly how much do you think a fair price for
a second hand Speedmachine like this would be?

I was trying to come up with a sensible number myself, but I'm very bad
at valuing things like this. A data point would be a vanilla new one
(no lights, no tailbag, no rack, mechanical discs) would set you back
£1775. That would be slightly lighter in the frame department as HPVel

cheap old bike frames. But no spare time to introduce them to each other,

ebay for £800 (Challenge Mistral mentioned on urc earlier) to my wife
and she said "how much do you spend on petrol at the moment?" not "you can't
possibly spend that much on a bike".)

Mmmmm. MIG welder! If only I had access to such technology. Version 2 of=20
the frame is a toss-up between a) Buy MIG welder and learn how to use=20
it. b) Cut and mitre tubes and hand to engineering firm to get them=20
welded.

Buy the welder. It might cost more up front, but just think of the sense of
achievement. I take it you checked out that mitring program I mentioned?
I've not got any bikes to make, but I tested it out on a few kitchen roll
tubes and it works pretty well :-)

Yup. I remembered seeing it before but not using it as I was working
with square tube!

WRT welding. Telford college is running an evening course on MIG welding
(And another on TIG which'd be fun, but less useful) starting in
September which I'm hoping to attend.

But having spent a day on a Mistral, I wouldn't give you =A3500 for a=20
brand new one to be honest. I'd replace the Streetmachine ASAP at full=20
price (=A31425 + a big chunk on extras) if it was eaten by voracious jedi=

pixies, though. Mileage varies, of course (some people seem to like=20
them), but the only thing the Mistral did for me that was positive was=20
convince me that Magura rim brakes were miles better than Vs and cantis, =

and I subsequently upgraded the brakes on the Streetmachine to HS-33s.

Seat didn't suit me, finish could've been better, suspension was nowhere =

near as good as HPVels, Optimas or Nazcas I've ridden and the standard=20
rack was completely hopeless for panniers. Which reinforces my usual=20
point on 'bents that buying them unseen (and, more to the point,=20
un/sat/) is IMHO a rather silly gamble with a potentially large amount=20
of money.

That's easily fixable, although you might be a little cramped on my
