I signed up for a BICYCLE DEATHS news notice at Google. A large
percentage is: cyclist kills or cyclist is killed but not by an SUV.
The following is part of a longer story where North Platte whines
about equal rights costs and a local problem with children killing
their parents.Murder prosecutions costly to county
by Frank Graham (North Platte Bulletin) - 3/15/2008
While no attorney's fees have yet been submitted to Lincoln County,
they are expected to be the bulk of the defense fees for both Alisha
Ochoa and Michael Grandon.
Check out our FREE online Bill Pay!Both asked for and received public defenders and the costs and
expenses of all three attorneys will likely be submitted after both
teens are sentenced.
LOther high-profile cases moved
Some of Lincoln County's most infamous trials were moved due to
extensive pre-trial publicity.
In 1979, the trial of Erwin Charles Simants was moved to Lancaster
County. Already convicted once in Lincoln County of murdering six
members of the Henry Kellie family of Sutherland in 1975, the verdict
was thrown out and a new trial ordered.
Simants was found not guilty by reason of insanity by a Lancaster
County jury.
The very next day, an anonymous juror said other jurors in the trial
were "coerced" by Douglas Scott Leigh, who had a masters degree in
psychology, and Elizabeth Monson. Both jurors were from Hickman and
were "very pushy," the juror said.
Simants has remained in the Lincoln Regional Center ever since.
Lincoln County District Judge John Murphy also moved another murder
trial.
The trial of Daniel Losinger, convicted of the 2001 murder of 40-year-
old Vicki Soto who was eight months pregnant when she was killed, was
moved to Buffalo County.
Losinger murdered Soto in her apartment then cut off her legs at the
knees and took them with him when he fled the scene.Losinger, a janitor, rode a bicycle around town.
Of concern was a circulated statement from a police spokesman that a
box on the back of a bicycle, caught in a grainy security videotape
from Wal-Mart, likely contained the legs of Soto and that it was
Losinger riding the bike.
After the motion for a change of venue, Murphy viewed the videotape
and said it was far too grainy to identify the rider and it was
irresponsible to guess what might have been in the box connected to
the frame behind the seat.
But Losinger never went to trial. He entered a plea agreement with
prosecutors, was found guilty of second-degree murder and a felony
weapons charge. He was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for the
murder count, and 10 to 20 years for the weapons count.Nebraska has history of teenage murder
The act of killing one's own mother is called matricide.
Children who kill members of their families do so for a number of
reasons, some of them readily understandable to adults and some
seemingly simply the working out of immature desires.
Alisha Ochoa is not the first 15-year-old accused of killing her
mother.
In 1993, Brett Reider, a 15-year-old boy in Omaha, stabbed his mother
to death during a dispute. He was convicted of second degree murder
and sentenced as an adult to 11-20 years. Brett was released in 1999
and discharged from parole in 2003.
Brett was the second and youngest child to his parents Darwin and
Claudia Reider. The All-American type family held a dark secret.
Claudia was obsessed with keeping up a pristine image to the community
and wanted her children to be the best at everything. She encouraged
them to get into sports and take advanced classes in school.
Claudia's obsession for perfection became almost manic. She soon
expected nothing but the best from both her children and when they
didn't measure up to her standards she would abuse them physically and
scream at them.
It wasn't too long afterwards that Brett started to reach his breaking
point and actually plotted to kill Claudia. He made friends with
another boy at his high school who had access to firearms and they
frequently discussed different methods of killing her.
One day he came home from school and Claudia quickly became violent
with him when she found out he'd only scored an 85 on a quiz. The two
soon got into a scuffle, wherein which she was beating him and he
zapped her with a stun gun.
Not too long afterwards Brett grabbed hold of a knife and stabbed
Claudia in the chest. Almost immediately afterwards he fled the house
and called 911. Though Claudia was still alive when paramedics
arrived, she died soon after from her injuries.
The story was immortalized in an HBO documentary in 1996. Called
"Brett Killed Mom: a sister's diary", the story was written by Alissa
Reider, Brett's sister. It claimed both of them suffered years of
constant verbal and physical abuse from their mother.
Soon after Lori and Tiara Solie's murders, law enforcement officials
who worked the case openly discussed the similarities between the
double homicide in North Platte and another couple convicted of the
murder of her parents nearly 50 years ago.
The police believe that after Michael Grandon and Alicia Ochoa carried
out their plan to kill Ochoa's mother and half-sister so they could be
together. They fled the state and were captured by the Wyoming State
Patrol.
A similar scenario played out nearly 50 years ago in Lincoln when
Charles Starkweather, then 20, argued and shot and killed his
girlfriend's mother and stepfather and strangled her 2-year-old sister
to death.
His 16-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, got home just in time to
witness all three murders.
Starkweather hid the bodies in various places outside the house.
Starkweather and Fugate stayed in the house for two more days, turning
people away under the pretense that everyone had the flu.
Fugate's grandmother became suspicious and called the police.
By the time the cops arrived, Starkweather and Fugate had already
left.
In the week that followed, Starkweather shot or stabbed seven people
to death.
More than 1,200 police officers and members of the National Guard
searched for the couple. They were finally arrested by state troopers
in Douglas, Wyo.
Starkweather first claimed he had held Fugate captive, but he dropped
the story when she called him a murderer and pinned the crimes on
him.
Starkweather was electrocuted in the Nebraska State Prison on June 25,
1959.
Fugate was sentenced to life in prison but was paroled in 1976.
Reportedly a model prisoner, Fugate was deemed fully rehabilitated and
earned parole.
Since then, she has lived in Lansing, Mich., where she works as a
medical assistant. She never married and has repeatedly refused to
discuss the case that made her famous. She is, by all accounts, a
dedicated worker and active Christian. -

anomalous bike crashes we actually know something about.

Open every day since 1 April, 1971well, some salt necessary for press reporting, erk, gruesome violence
not traumatic cycle death from no lights at night but the point gets
across. Bicycling exposes self to the environment, good and evil
aspects with a measure of violence not attributable to a negative
environment but from the exposure.Google's output here recommends more police mace gas cannister than
Cateye front rear and sides. We all know about the lighting problem, Google and press add: carry a
weapon. -
