I do squats by holding dumbbells near my hips, but most people do them
with a barbell across the back. Will it be a problem the way I do it?

True. ;-)
But they are better than nothing? If one does not have a rack to use for instance?
Richard, go to Oshmans and buy a simple rack!
They are not that expensive......

Of course they are better than nothing. It also may help to
pre-exhaust your quads somehow, say with leg extensions or another
exercise before doing dumbbell squats since you can't use as much
weight as you can with a barbell. My shoulders/traps aren't very
strong and one time I decided to do dumbbell squats but the dumbbells
were probably too heavy for my shoulders - it felt like my arm was
going to be pulled out of its socket.Oh, and don't worry about whether you look foolish doing them - if it's
a safe exercise that you can get results from, then who cares?Ken

Why not do them just using a long bar and plates, on your shoulders?
You don't need a rack, as long as you are judicious with the weight
(i.e., don't overload yourself) and have good balance.M.
