SRAM gripshift handles

You can just replace the rubber grips. I'd recommend the X.0 grip
pattern which I think should fit the Attack also. It's slightly softer
rubber but the pattern is great.

It'll cost you about 15 quid a set though. A set of shifters are about
45 quid a pair though if you want the same or you could switch to Attack
Triggers for about the same.

Personally I would switch the whole setup to a trigger type gear shifting
but thats personal preferance If you want new grips pretty much any set of
grips will do but you may have to cut them down or if you dont want to cut
them down you can move the shifter along this also has the advantage of
reducing accidental gear shifting by not having you hand on the shifter all
the time.

I should have been more clear in my description, it's the bit you twist
that's all manky, not the small bit of stationary grip on the end that
doesn't rotate.

Yes, I'm not convinced about the whole twist grip thing either to be
honest. I'm still thinking about it since it's on my new recumbent
OSS, and I'm trying to decide how well trigger shifters would work.

FWIW I've converted my Cannondale from XTR triggers to SRAM 9.0
gripshifts, and for me there's no way I'd go back.

Trigger shifters
* can't trim the front mech
* can only change a limited number of cogs at a time
* are vulnerable to snagging on twigs, brambles etc

Grip shifters
* can trim the front mech
* can sweep through the whole cassette in one go, if that's what you
want
* don't have anything to catch or snag.

For me, they're just better.

i replaced my shimano deore shifters and front and rear mechs to SRAM x9's and they're a revelation...so far!

For me, they're just better.

Thank goodness someone else thinks so. My new flat bar road bike has
trigger shifters and I was told by the shop that this is the cat's
pyjamas of gear shifting. I'm getting used to the system to some extent
but I still feel that the gripshift systems on my other bikes (one
Shimano, one Mickey Mouse) are much superior not only for the reasons
you give but also because they are just that much more accurate in response.

Cheers Simon, I've gone with some new grip shifters. On reflection the
pluses are rather useful, especially that change down half the cassette
in one go when making a quick stop.

lever as far as Im aware you press the kever down to go up a gear and lift
it up to go up a gear. Like a road bike.

Has anyone given these a real trial I would like to know how the work and if
they are any good

No, SRAM sell replacement twist grip grips. They'll sell you them
individually even if you only want a right hand shifter grip. About £7-8
a side.

And integrating brakes and shifters was a bad idea in the 1990s and
still is on a mountain bike.

They still aren't as good as SRAM triggers.
