Is there any way to tell between 8 and 9 speed Power links? I bought a
couple last year when I went back to England. I tried to fit them to a
chain but absolutely no way will they lock. Any advice?

Of the ones I've used, 9Spd ones are marked as such... and Gold. 8Spd
ones are silver.

Or black, some of the older 8sp ones are black, I've got a couple here
somewhere. I agree though, all the 9 speed ones I've seen are gold and
have 9sp stamped on 'em.

Thanks guys! So I guess I wasted my money, does anyone know of such
things that do fit Shimano chains(Shimano XT or HG73 I think)? I've
never seen Power links here in Japan.

SRAM Powerlinks work with Shimano (and Campag) chains if the "speed" is
correct. I would order some.

Just get a SRAM chain.

Dunno 'bout "XT" or "HG73" but I have a SRAM silver PowerLink on a Shimano
IG-51 8-speed chain. No problems!
BTW: if you see a KMC "Missing Link" ...out of the package the Missing Link
is "one time use only." Once installed, it won't come off without a chain
tool. Someone in U.R.C. mentioned filing down a nub on them to make them
reusable just like the PowerLink. The KMC's seem more common and certainly
less expensive around here...perhaps where you are too.
Good luck,
Chris
