    Are they a complete bugger to actually release?

    I made a point of cleaning the bike today, and bought a chain splitting tool
    and a couple of powerlinks so I could fit one and use it as a means of
    "quick release" in the future for when I want to clean things.

    Cleaning went well, used some citrus degreasing stuff, rinsed everything off
    and the sun dried all the parts out (including the chain) pretty quickly.

    Fitting the link was easy, but then I realised in my rush to put things back
    together, I'd actually threaded the chain around the wrong side of the
    little lug that sticks out of the rear mech (in the middle of the 2 plates
    between the 2 cogs)

    "Never mind", I thought "I'll just push on this here link, take it apart and
    I'll have it fixed in seconds".

    Could I actually undo it? No.

    Pushed, pulled, wiggled it, no joy.

    Then I logged on, read uk.rec.cycling to see if there were any tips! Some
    suggested using a bit of wire and tightening it with pliers, some said they
    can do it one handed in 5 seconds.

    In the end, I took the 2 allen headed screws out of the derailleur to take
    it apart so I could get the chain in right.

    Maybe I just need to practise!

    It's a shimano 8 speed chain by the way - Are they slightly thicker than a
    Sram? That would explain the fact that I can't push the plates together as
    suggested.

    Yes I did buy the right size link by the way before anyone asks!

    Did it myself for the first time today.

    Take the two links on either side of the powerlink and bring them together,
    holding in one hand so the powerlink bulges upwards.
    Pinch the side plates together with the other finger and thumb and slide.

    separate the plates. Works every time.

    No, dead easy, but it's a knack; you have to both squeeze and slide at
    the same time. Practice with a clean link before you need to do it for
    real with a gungy one.

    It must be one of those things, like plastering or bricklaying.

    Easy when you know how, and looks easy when you see it done.

    But a right git to do yourself!

    I have never used one with a Shimano chain, so what you suggest may be
    possible, however the difference could only be microns otherwise it would
    bind on the cassette/block.

    It is, especially the quote :-

    That probably explains why it's a bit difficult to get off with my Shimano
    chain!

    Might be a grain of truth in it but basically that's marketing talk.

    The same complaints are made with SRAM chain before The Knack is acquired.
    8sp Powerlink works OK with 8sp Shimano chain, IME. Also a 9sp Powerlink
    is fine with Campag C9 chain.
