My daughter, Debbie, saw a Stick Blender when she happened upon a
cooking show and she wants to get one.
Who has one that she/he can recommend? Any help in this matter would
be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance, M

In previous postings , I believe the consenous was a braun worked well and
was priced right. They were under $39.00 and came with attachments.
But this depends on what your daughter would use it for...The braun ain't
the strongest unit.

I have a Braun and am quite happy with it! It's several years old and
still going strong.

I really like the Braun stick blender, too. I asked my hardware store
to order one for me (they didn't have one in stock), and he only
charged me $20.
Enjoy,

My much-used Cuisinart Quick Prep stick blender is 18 years old (yes, 18!)
and still going strong. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. I did a quick
online check, and they run about USD $30. I originally paid $50+ for mine,
so they've come down in price. I just hope they're made as well today as
they were in 1988.

Thank you all for your help. I forwarded all the answers to Debbie
and here is what she just emailed me:

now.
She intends to look up all the ones that were recommended by you and I
will let you know when she tells me what her choice is. Once more,
thank you very much. You made this chore very easy for Debbie.

The Swiss-made ESGE Zauberstab stick blenders are the highest-regarded
retail ones here. There are several models and the cheapest can be
found for around EUR 80. I believe they are marketed under the name
"Bamix" in the USA and the cheaper models cost around $100 or a bit
more.
Braun models are not quite as highly regarded here, but still considered
good and have the advantage of costing rather less, possibly being
better value for money.

Braun is what I've been using for years. I got it after wearing out my old
Moullinex (sp?) - the old M. lasted over a dozen years - until it dropped to
the floor for the second or thrird (read "LAST"😉 time...!

Debbie has made up her mind. More or less.
Quoted message said:I've decided on this one:
http://www.oster.com/productdetail.aspx?id=214&cat=30It's more powerful than most (250 watts instead of 200), and the
chopping bowl is twice the size of the others (four cups instead of
two). It's in the $40.00 range. Isla has the Braun and says it's
prone to splatter, but she still loves it.
Does anybody have this Oster Stick Blender? Does anybody know
something to tell here about it? Thank you.

Looks like a winner. It looks like it takes up minimal storeage space and

And based on that consensus, I bought one for
myself and liked it so much I gave one to my mom
on Mother's Day.

That Oster has accessories that are very similar
to the Braun, but the motor is only 250 watts
and the Braun is 450 watts. That's one of the
things that I really like about the new Braun
-- it's so much faster than my old Braun (160W),
and can achieve finer purees.

That's what I was going to say. I've got a bamix and I totally love it to
death 🙂

Ditto here. I first read about them on eGullet, and they were
considered among the best. I got one, and am very, very pleased.

Theyre also called Bamix in Switzerland.

I have a Braun (after killing my 20 yo Moulinex last year, it was
awesome), it's good but it splatters and is a bit difficult to clean.

Me too. I had another make for years, but when it died I replaced it
with a Bamix. I use it more than I use the food processor.
In Oz most people use Bamix as the generic term for these indispensable
gizmos, because they were the first, and for a long time the only, make
marketed here about 20 years ago. I think it's worth paying for the best.

Hmm. I just run mine in a little hot soapy water and rinse it off.
Nothing difficult about it.

If I were to buy one for myself, I'd just get any decent brand, or even a
cheap brand. And I would REALLY want one that can also chop and aybe also
has a small container to use for pesto and such.
I suspect it's hard to go wrong.

Okay cooks illustrated rated stick blenders in the March/April 06 issue
Their comments is as follows
1. Kitchenaid $49.99 - few extras, good as traditional blender
2. Braun Multiquick $34.95 - Great $ and performance, plastic shaft can't
be used over heat.
3. Braun Multiquick Pro $34.95 - More attachments no more performance.
4. Cuisinart Smartstick $69.99 - Trouble with chunky pesto.
5. Hamilton Beach Turbo-Twister Mixing stick $19.99 - good value, don't
like plastic housing
6. Proctor-Silex $12.99 - Blade cage cramped leads to occaisional
clogging.
7. Oster Hand Blender w/Blending Cup $23.99 - vibrates and loud.
8. Farberware Special Select $24.99 - Refused to puree broccoli soup,
bulky handle.
9. Cuisinart cordless $49.95 - Loose joints between components and lack
of guts trumped cordless feature.
YMMV
