I locked my trundlie (cheaper road bike) to the rail provided outside
the Central Market today to do my shopping, as usual, but when I
came back someone had put their bike (a really crappy old tractor)
opposite mine, and looped their cable lock around /both/ bikes. Aargh!
I waited around for an hour or so for them to come back, but eventually
I had to catch a bus home to get to my Tues night group ride on time. I
didn't get back there until nearly 10pm - nothing had changed.
I didn't want to leave my bike there all night, or appear to be trying to
steal it by cutting the cable and leave their bike to be nicked. So
I went to the nearby cop shop (still in head-to-to lycra!), and after some
umming and aaahing about doing "property damage", they came over and cut
the cable for me. They said they'd take the bike, and leave a sticker on
the rail telling the owner who to call about getting it back.
I still don't know whether it was an honest mistake (although 10pm is
very late to leave a bike around) or a plan to come back at 3am and strip
my bike (in which case why leave another bike?). Has this every happened
to anyone else?
