Yup, I've been buying California strawberries for the last week or so
and enjoying them immensely. But then...

The first berries were ready in my own patch -- not many, just a few,
but they were READY!

Red, ripe, full, juicy.

Warm from the sun.

No comparison. No comparison at all. I'm in heaven. Can't wait for the
rest to ripen!

I have been getting some terrific produce from Trader Joe's lately! Especially the
watermelon, raspberries and blackberries. I also drove up to Encinitas to my favorite
strawberry stand, and Lord, were they ever worth the drive....

We just picked some up on the way back from an errand this morning.
$1.50 per basket. They are huge and smelled wonderful. Most will be
used for a cake, but I'm sure a few will be mine, all mine!

All of ours survived that horrible late freeze but all of my mums appear
to have croaked. (Many of the trees are still very stressed and trying
to recover.) But my husband was so worried about keeping the deer out
or the strawberries--- which he did--- that he forgot about the birds.
The berries are now netted and we expect to have some in a couple days.

We have been picking peas (Knight), however. Yum!
