I have no idea what happend at the front of bunch but from what I have heard
from Phil (via Navid) was the chain of events was started by Rod who was on
the front of the pack was putting his raincoat away in his mussette (NOT
something you should be doing whilst you are on the front of the bunch) and
for some unknown reason suddenly slowed down.
I was riding third wheel on the left file behind Phil. As we passed the
parked white van there was the first of two sudden slowing downs. The first
of these left me almost touching Phil's wheel the second, asplit second
later, was much more intense and left me with no option but to roll up the
outside (right side) of Phil. The only problem with this was that Phil had
hit the brakes and due to whatever was going on in front of him he also
moved right. What happens next is I loose my front wheel against Phil's
rear and hit the deck on my left side. Navid then ends up with nowhere to
go but ride over me, thankfully missing me but riding over my back wheel.
Navid then ends up wiping out himself landing pretty heavily on his right
hand side.
From what I gather you must have only just missed being a victim yourself.
Did anyone else go down?

The damage to the bikes does not look to be too severe. My back wheel will
need a true and there are a few more scratches to the STI Levers and the
pedals are missing a bit of alloy of the left side. Navid's Frame looks to
be OK but his front wheel (Ksyrium SSL) will need to be trued. I think we
both did a pretty good job of keeping our bodies between the bikes and the
road surface. ;-)
As for personal injuries I'm on crutches due to a badly sprained, hugely
swollen, left ankle. I have a large patch of skin off the front of my left
knee that is yet to get a crust on it and I have a few other smaller cuts
and abraisions to the left hand side fingers, elbow and hip. The only thing
that is really a problem is the ankle sprain. Looks like I'll be off the
bike for a few days.
Navid has a large bruise to his right shoulder (collarbone looks ok) and
right thigh as well as a few smaller cuts an abraisions on hands and legs.
Other than that I think he came out of it pretty well. While we were
waiting for Frank to arrive with a vehicle another mate riding along beach
road stopped to make sure we were ok. He was sports first aid qualified and
carried out a couple of tests on Navid's shoulder to confirm all was Ok.
