  1. I have a dilemma. Trying to figure out all options. Maybe someone can
    help.

Live in Northern Virginia. Trying to get in shape for Shenandoah 100 in
September, but I travel a lot for work, as much as 2-3 weeks a month. So
training time is hard to come by.

I have two bikes and a few locations to figure out.

Bike 1 is an 04 FSR Stumpjumper Elite. Bike 2 is an older Gary Fisher
hardtail in excellent shape. I need long rides whenever possible.

I spend 1 week a month in Boulder. 1 week a month along mexican border in
AZ (Organ Pipe/Cabeza Preita), and 1-2 weeks in northern virginia
(gambrill/gw national forest, fountainhead). I have no Colorado experience
and no AZ experience. Which bikes should go where given terrain, and how to
    ship economically?

    Any help welcomed. Thanks

Any bike goes anywhere. It's the skill you use to ride them that counts.

Since I have no skill, hardtail for VA and that part of AZ and FS for CO.

Old Fisher. I wouldn't spend big bucks on a bike the airline gorillas
will be throwing around regularly. One bike will do all of that fine.
Its not like you won't be able to ride. When I lived in Boulder nobody
rode FS, or front suspension. It hadn't been invented. Keep it simple.

I'd go the FS in AZ and the HT in CO and VA. Too many steeps in CO for an
FS though it can be done, robs too much climbing energy.

Someday I'll be lean enough to [censored] about how much energy my FS robs. :-)

  6. While in boulder you will also gain nice aerobic endurance toward the
end of the week due to the elevation. Even though you are only there a
week you can still train on flat roads if time is short to get to a
trail. Using the FS bike on a regular flat road will not be as
efficient therefore you will be working your horses and lungs that much
more. You will feel the burn just make sure you take in decent calories
during the post-workout time you have.

As far as shipping a rig, your local bike shop should have experience
packing a bike for shipment. Than all you need to do is let the shop
where you are heading receive the bike for you and assemble what they
have to to get it ridable. My buddy did this and used FedEx because his
bike when packed weighed less than 35lbs. I think if it weighs any more
than that then you have to use UPS. This sounds right if memory serves.
My buddy works for Symbol and travels lots for business. He did this
in order to get his rig up to Montana.

    Peace.

  7. But the aerobic benefits should out weigh efficiency since he is
training. Definitely bring the FS to Boulder.

    Peace.

  8. Never let the airlines get a hold of either your rig or your clubs (if
you golf)! Stick to UPS or FedEx. Trust me on this...

    Peace.
