  1. I just broke the Suntour Accushift 3040 rear derailleur off my ancient Panasonic. It completely
snapped off, no chance of getting it back on. Now I am either searching for a 15-year old derailleur
to replace it, or need to find a new derailleur that is compatible to replace it.

Is Suntour still around? Do they make a part that can replace the Accushift 3040? Are there any
other derailleurs that are a good replacement made by shimano or other manufacturers? It's a
    six-speed derailleur, and came off a 1988 Panasonic MC-3500.

Any advice you can give me in terms of a good replacement part or an original 3040 derailleur would
    be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

No, though an unrelated company with the same name does.

It turns out that the indexing of SunTour 6-speed shifters matches pretty well with Shimano 7-speed.

My advice is to buy a Shimano rear derailer (any model) and a Shimano 7-speed freewheel (also a new
    chain to match.)

This is an easy, inexpensive way to upgrade to 7-speeds and get into non-obsolete parts.

Tried eBay? There are a few Suntour rear mechs on there, some of them quite old.

Index or not? If not any derailleur will work. And if index any derailleur as well. Suntour indexing
was a chancy thing at best, very dependent on things like the right chain. So put any derailleur on
and welcome to the world of friction shifting. Phil Brown

I don't know about that last sentence... With 10sp about to become the "norm," 7sp is as obsolete as
6sp. If you're talking about the brand of derailleur, I agree.

Heck, its getting harder to find 8sp stuff!

I still remember thinking I was hot stuff riding 7sp... Then they brought out 8sp and I was "behind
    the times" again.

Remember the arguments about 8sp mtn components? Too finicky, gonna break, don't "need" that many
gears... Sound familliar (except the number of gears)?
